Puppy sleep help

I just brought home my 8 week old puppy (1/2 yorkie 1/2 Rat Terrier) my question is when it comes to nighttime. I tried putting him in his crate (he went in willing) but when I set the crate next to the bed & he was not physically with me he starts whining and howling like crazy. Next I tried putting him in the 5'x5' wire kennel we have for him.As I sit typing this (very sleep deprived) he's in the kennel not 6' away just howling & crying. Do I just shut the lights off & go back upstairs & go to bed & let him cry it out & get used to it? He was in a wire kennel at his previous house (although it was with mom & the rest of the litter) I did take him out to go potty before putting him in here also.

I don't crate so I can't give you much advice on that but there are many stickies on the topic and I'm sure other members will have lots of info for you. My guess would be that you should place him near your bed, give him a shirt that smells like you, stuffed animal...shut off the lights and try to ignore him. He's very young and crying at night is normal. Puppies are a lot of work and will need to go potty every couple of hours even during the night for the night. Nyla would cry when she needed to go potty which was a lot. I don't think I slept more than 2 hours straight for the first 2-3 weeks.
If it was my pup, I'd set up my bedroom as a safe puppy proof place and have him sleep on the bed or atleast in little area set up for him. To me, having someone near helps them not miss their litter so much.
It will get better I promise and in a few weeks you will be able to sleep through the night.

Welcome to the forum.
Place one of your dirty shirts in the kennel along with a portable clock. The shirt will have your scent for the puppy to cuddle with and the clock will simulate a heart beat. He may fuss at first but just let him settle on his own. Do not take him out of the kennel when he is fussing. Wait until he is quiet then take him out.

You were almost there with the crate next to your bed. Turn out the light. Reach down and let him lick your fingers. Leave your hand there. He will likely fuss for a while, hopefully not more than 30 minutes. Don't say anything to him, no scolding him or anything like that. Just be still and relax your breathing. He'll figure out its night time, and that you are there still.

Understand that a puppy new to a home, and young, is absolutely terrified to be alone. That's what all the screaming is about. Instinctively he knows he is "prey" to other animals.

It takes some time for him to feel safe. If you keep him near to you, he will feel both safe, and learn to count on you as his protector.
