Puppy daycare

So on the suggestion of the puppy class trainer, we're taking Tessa to puppy daycare starting monday morning @7 am. I'm a little nervous. Tessa is my baby and hasn't left my side other than to go into her crate for 3-4 hours when I go to work and don't have a puppy sitter.

It's like I have first-time mommy syndrome (you know the moms that don't want to leave their babies at daycare or kindergarten, for fear they'll get sick or in trouble or simply not need them as much any more!!!)

I've seen the daycare (it's where we go for puppy class) and I am confident that no one will voluntarily let Tessa have any problems and I'm sure she'll have a ball...but it's my first time being separated from my baby for 6 hours!!!

I went through this with my son when he was a baby going to daycare and now with Cobber. Completely natural and understandable!

My biggest concern with Cobber was/is that he will end up bonding with the head of the daycare more than with me, but he still seems pretty happy to see me when I pick him up and all the time we spend together. I have to tell you, getting a happy, worn out puppy at the end of the day is absolutely wonderful!

When I took him to daycare yesterday, I asked the lady who runs the place to wear him out and go light on lunch so he'd be tired and hungry for last night's puppy class. As a result, he got nothing but "Excellent!" and "Good job!" comments from the instructor at class last night (it also helped that my treats were hot dog and cheese bits).

So while I sit here at work and think about Cobber all day long and miss him tons, I'm soooo happy I found this daycare place -- they take really good care of him and he's getting all sorts of fantastic socialization and playtime out of it. I don't think you'll be sorry at all

Don't they provide a web site where you can watch them at doggy day care?
That would make me feel a lot better about leaving him.
And ya, I would be worried sick thinking about him.

They don't have a viral website (with doggie day cams) but the owner does take candid pictures of puppy play. I might just ask if maybe they can take a few videos

Hi! I dog sit a couple of dogs a lot, one almost every day in my home! Don't worry about your dog bonding primarily with the daycare provider! Charlotte REALLY knows who her mom is and can't wait to see her walk through the door. I am just her gram and do the gram type of things, lol. The dogs love "daycare"! I would drop in there randomly just to see how the other dogs interact with yours.

I would be curious to hear how it goes kaywilson. I am thinking of putting my pup into day care once a week too. I think it may be good for her to get used to other people being in charge for a change. My pup is quite people shy though so I've been worried about how its going to go. Send an update after daycare!

I work at a doggie daycare, and let me tell you, some days it is the best job in the world! I love getting to have amazing relationships with all these awesome dogs and getting to know their owners too. My biggest pet peeve though is the person who can't leave their dog and who hangs out where their dog can see them through the glass. This makes the dogs 1000 times more upset than they would be otherwise, and it takes them twice as long to settle in and start playing.
If your schedule allows, I definitely recommend dropping her off quickly and sneaking back 45 minutes to an hour later to quietly check on her. I love seeing the looks on people's faces when their "really shy, doesn't really play" dog is full on wrestling and playing tag with a bunch of friends when they poke their heads back in after all the dogs have gotten acclimated to one-another.
I'm sure your girl is going to have a great time!!

*update*

well Tessa went for a half day of daycare today. I dropped her off and was told everything would be fine, and not to worry. So my mom and I proceeded to run some errands. It didn't go well.

Unfortunatly Tess had a bad time. Poor Tess isn't welcome back because the trainer (who we do puppy class with) said daycare is too much for her; ironically she recommended going to daycare because she said Tessa needed to get out there and socialize more and that they'd take care of her and make sure she was ok.

Apparently poor Tess would greet the others well but would turn away from them and sulk in the corner, she wouldn't play, wouldn't sniff, and as the trainer said "completely shut down". She also wouldn't eat or drink, and as I found out when we got home, held her bowels for the whole 5 hours (it was like she held the river nile).

The trainer says to "just let her learn to greet dogs on walks one on one because she is obviously not able to cope being around other dogs". She also said "it wasn't a positive experience for her"

I don't know if it was caused because this was the first time being left (if that was the case, wouldn't the trainer suggest more sessions?), or if it was a socialization problem (but she does great with other dogs on her walks and at the park). Or if this is an issue with the trainer and daycare.

I'm at a loss. I feel horrible. Tessa has been hiding under my bed for the last 3 hours, shaking. No chicken or cheese will rouse her. I don't think that's normal...I hope I didn't cause her damage

I'm also a little cheezed because the trainer made it sound like Tessa had a horrifying experience but didn't call me to come get her early which I could have because I was off today and was available to get her at whatever time needed (I gave them my cell and my home). If it was really such a bad time wouldn't they have phoned? why would they just let her be there if she was so uncomfortable? What really happened in those 5 hours?

Why can't dogs talk?

So tonight I'm feeling discouraged and don't think we'll be making it to puppy class tonight, unless it's being held under my bed
