Puppy breed?

In the summer my parents have allowed me to buy a puppy in the summer when I finish school. I never owned a dog before but lots of my family have owned dogs or currently own a dog. The will be taken for walks for atleast 2/3 times a day. I am not allowed a big dog, sO no bigger than a springer spaniel. I want a short haired dog/or a dog that doesnt need it's hair cutting. So far, we are very interested in a beagle or Bassett hound. We like springer spaniels but I think there grooming needs are too high. I do not want a dog like a staffy. So I would like opinions on a beagle and I'd like suggestions of other breeds. Thanks

Hn, What year in school will you be? Have you discussed with your parents who/how the dog will be taken care of when/if you go away to college?

Depending on where you get your hounds, they may have quite a bit of tracking instinct, so a securely fenced yard will be even more important than usual. Temperaments are going to range, but beagles may be more active. The bassets tend to have very sloppy ears since they drag when their noses are to the ground- which is often. Bassets are also more prone to joint issues than beagles- some have very twisted legs- and will probably need arthritis/pain meds in their senior years. Also, don't be fooled by the bassets' short stature; they are hefty dogs.

Here are the two breeds' club websites that contain more information about them:
Welcome to the Home of The Basset Hound Club of America
National Beagle Club

Let us know how the search goes!
