Need help introducing 10 year old male JRT to 8 week puppy JRT

We have a 10 year old Jack Russell Terrier, Vanny who suffers from epilepsy. He is medicated on phenobarb and has been fine for years on the medications not having any break through seizures. A few days ago we brought home an 8 week old female Jack Russell puppy, Shannon. Shannon is a sweetheart and took no time at all becoming comfortable in our home. Van like to growl to talk and has given her a little bit here and there but we are careful to protect her because she is so tiny compared to him. Van has gone from being indifferent toward the new puppy to down right hatred, whenever Shannon tries to play with him or even goes near him Van runs upstairs and hides under a bed, something he hasnt resorted to in years. I am very worried that this new puppy could be badly stressing Van out and I need some advice from a dog expert on how to go about socializing the two dogs. We are trying to show Van alot of attention and give him the top dog status however it does not seem to be working. Please help.

Congratulations on your new puppy! I am definitely no expert but I can share my recent experiences with you. I have a 7 year old rat terrier, Crash, and 3 weeks ago I introduced a 9 week old german shepherd-mix puppy, Stella, to him. When I first brought Stella home, Crash was submissive until she bit him with her sharp puppy teeth. After that, he wouldn't give her the time of day for about a week. I didn't force it and made sure that I sat on the floor and played with each of them at the same time with different toys. Then one day she had a bone and he walked over to her and took the bone from her. She tried to get it back and they played keep away for a minute. Each day it improved and now they play non-stop and act like they have been together forever. If she bites him too hard, he will reprimand her, but overall they are great together now. HTH!
