Need help with age of my shih tzu pup?

Hi! I got me a precious shih tzu pup last Wednesday. I know I didn't get him from a great breeder. The lady said he was the last one and was born August 1st. I did not get to see his parents, she kept her dogs in the back and when we asked to look at one of her yorkies she really didn't want us to see them because they weren't clean. When she went around back I swear I heard 20 dogs. I had called before hand so she had my little guy clean and in her house. I took him to the vet the very next day and got his shots (she had already given his 1st ones). The vet changed his bday up to Aug 15 because he doesn't have all his teeth. On to my question, even changing his bday would put him at 9 weeks and his front bottom teeth still aren't completely through the gums and I can't see his top front left tooth at all? Could he have bad teeth or be even younger? He eats fine and is happy and active, especially for a baby that was left outside without human contact. Any advise is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

For some reason Shih Tzu are a lot slower than other breeds to get their teeth in. I sold a puppy that was 8 weeks old and when she took it into the Vet, he said it was only about 6 weeks old. Made me really mad as I would never sell a puppy at that age and could tell her exactly what time and date the puppy was born.

I even had pictures with the date on, that I took the day the puppy was born and you could tell by the markings that it was her puppy.

Oh good, maybe he was born on the 1st of August. I still can't see the tooth even trying to come through on top and all the bottom ones haven't broke through. With the way this seller was I wouldn't be surprised if she even knew when they were born. They were all obviously all outside with many other dogs and his tummy and feet were even stained yellow. He's spoiled rotten now! Thanks!

The only advise I have is to report her.

I know toy breeds are to be hold until their 12 weeks old in America by AKC standard.

All of the baby teeth should be in by 8 weeks. If he doesn't have them, then I'd say he's younger than you think or his genetics are really really poor. By 4-5 months, he should start losing some incisors and getting permanent ones (and growing some premolars and molars. By 6-7 months, the permanent canines should be in.

Obviously there is a little variation in this but I'd highly suspect that this woman didn't have a clue about breeding or how old this puppy was.

That being said, since his genetics is probably pretty poor, don't be surprised if he has a problem losing teeth due to malocclusion of his jaws... this is especially true of the canine teeth. Often times these small dogs will retain the baby teeth when the permanent ones come in. These baby teeth should be removed when the pup is spayed/neutered so as to not over-crowd the mouth and cause even more dental issues.

I guess I will just have to watch for when they finally break through. I've had Roscoe over a week now and figured they would have come in by now. Hopefully soon. If he does have dental probs I will def have them taken care of, going to have him neutered as soon as he is old enough. His next vet appt is on the 4th. I just don't get it. The lady had already given him his first shots 3 weeks before I got him and I've gotten his 2nd set. If he is still under 8 weeks then that would mean he had them at 3 weeks or sooner? Is that okay for a pup to get them so young?

I hope you have his shot record and not go by her word. The best thing to do is call the vet that gave him his first round of shots. You might also want to ask them what health does the pups have with that breeder.

No she didn't give me a shot record, she gives her pups their shots. The vet said he seemed to be in good health, I took him in the day after I got him to make sure everything was okay.

ARG, this really irritates me. So basically, the pups probably never saw a vet either. This woman is horrible excuse for a "breeder".

I'd consider the shots he just got his first round. The earlier ones, if he got them, were useless.

Giving shots that young is absolutely useless as when they are nursing, they still have immunity from the mother. That is why they give them three shots, to make sure the last shot is well after the immunity from the mother is gone. The first two shots are to catch any of the pups that may not still have the immunity from the mother. By the sound of it, I would just ignore the fact she told you they had had shots and go from the first one your Vet gave the puppy.
