Tear stains are natural for many different breeds of dog. Beware of any tears stain products. As far as I have heard they are all dangerous.

It's a dog, not a toy. You'll have tear stains and dirty coats, etc. Don't over-think it, it definitely isn't a "problem".

Malteses are one of the breeds that are notorious for getting tear stains. All white dogs have the potential. I have a Westie but luckily Sam has never had any. I trained him from a puppy age to let me get boogers out of his eyes. Malteses and Bichons tend to have it worse off. Just something you have to deal with.

Some people change their food and give them only distilled water to avoid it, I would steer clear of the bleaching products-they could get into his eye and if it's chemical could make him go blind. Not worth it. Look up natural remedies or ask your vet. Some groomers will cut around it too.

I have heard that breeding can cause this but I have not heard it being linked to inbreeding though. I would keep the hair around his eyes trimmed they might get into them and irritate a bit making the problem worse and just get him used to it already to have the area around his eyes cleaned.
