my pup needs friends!but where?!

Hello,

I recently adopted a shelter pup ( we think its a minpin/poodle/long hair chi?) and she is about 10-11 wks old right now. I have been searching all over the internet for puppy socialization groups/meet ups in orange county california but no luck . All the puppy socialization things are classes you have to pay for, and I'm not about to pay. Does anybody know of anything? Should I just take her to the small dog section of the dog park? Thanks for any responses

I would not recommend take your pup to a dog park. And I would recommend puppy classes, they are much more than socializing. I have a 4 1/2 month old pup at this time, I also have several dogs but I still took her out to socialize her with other strange dogs that were puppy friendly. She had her 3 month old birthday at an agility trial where I was competing with one of my other dogs. She has also completed a kindergarden puppy class, where we were able to continue with her socialization and train in a very distracting place. I am a dog trainer, I run classes and yet I enrolled my pup in someone else's puppy classes. I am also able to train my pup because of being a trainer and competing, but that doesn't mean I don't learn in some else's class...............
Another note of concern, it also isn't recommended that a bunch of pups or dogs be turned loose for socializing. Some classes still do this and I would avoid them. Too many pups get scared, overwhelmed or learn that they can bully another pup and it isn't uncommon for one to be hurt. It also doesn't teach pups how to nicely greet other pups/dogs in a safe manner or to wait for permission to greet.

a puppy socialization class would be the best thing.. and worth paying for imo...
you might seek out friends with dogs that you know and and try some intros there also... the classes would be better tho, imo, as you would have someone there to guide you if anyone didn't get along...

I agree-no dog park-unless they have to prove vaccinations. A dog who isn't could make your pup very deathly ill.

I'd do puppy classes. First they are great for you and pup-even seasoned dog owners imho should take EVERY new dog they get to at least one round of classes. AND they have puppy play dates after-you could get phone numbers after class is out and set up play dates This is the thing I highly highly recommend to any owner-new or seasoned-puppy classes will make the difference.

thanks so much, I think Im going to enroll her for a class. the reason i didnt want to pay was bc i thought it was just a group of puppies playing. I didnt know there was structure to it. so would one class make a difference or should she attend more? Thanks again!

The more the better...your dog should meet hundreds of people, and if possible hundreds of dogs...and the experiences should be as positive as possible.

That is wonderful and you maybe surprised at how much fun you'll have as well. A good instructor will teach you how to safely introduce your pup to other pups and dogs. Hopefully you can also learn how to read other dog's behaviour to a degree, so you can avoid the ones that may hurt your pup or scare it.
The puppy classes that I just finished with my little girl was a riot, the goal of the class was controlled socializing, basic training (sit/down/etc, calming exercises, focus exercises) but we also had a fake door to work on waiting until released to go through the door, tippy boards, placement mats, a very shortened agility tunnel, a pop up tent (ask them to get in, ask them to wait until asked to come out) and so much more.
