Input Wanted - 8 weeks puppy owner

Hi, this is my first post here at this forum! My gf and I just recently got a new puppy, she is 8 weeks old Maltipoo named PP. My gf and I never had a dog before, so we did a lot research before getting one. It's been a weeks since we brought her home from a breeder, and I am undergoing alot of stress. We arranged our work schedule so we can stay with her 7 days a week, PP is really good with sleeping and potty-ing outside, probably only couple accidents at home. She has a crate that she takes nap and ex pen she play in during day time.

My problem with her now is she is really difficult to leash walk...we tried to take her out for a 15-30 min walk every couple hours around the apartment complex, but she only wants to hang out in the grass area where she potty at. If we pull the leash a bit, she would jump and go crazy whining. And lately she showed some aggression when thing doesn't go her way, biting the training pad in her ex pan..growl at us if touched her toys at bit...nothing serious yet but i do want to fix bad behavior as young as I could...we are thinking taking her to those obedience training class once she hit 14-15 weeks and have vaccinated. Any experience with those class? useful?

Congratulations on your new puppy! At 8 weeks old don't expect too much! Attention span is nil at that age! Also, taking her out at a apt building's grounds is risky for an unvaccinated puppy! You are risking Parvo big time!!!!! It's highly contagious and stays viral for months, so any dogs who may have peed/pooped in the area could have been a carrier! With such a tiny breed it might be better if you potty pad trained her for now. If you have a balcony you can put it out there!
As far as puppy classes are concerned........only good if you are taught positive response training, no Caeser Milan stuff on such a tiny dog!!!! For some really good puppy advice, download the free stuff on DogstarDailycom.

P.S. Also, use a halter on her, as a flat collar could harm her throat/trachea if she is fighting a leash.

ahh....I think you're right...but we been letting her out since day 1..walk...potty...she wont get all her shot probably another 2 months...does that mean no outside exercise and potty train for her until then??

now i am really scared...we visited the vet couple days ago...and she gave us some pill for worms prevention and stuff...we fed her 2 days ago...she threw up that night...And i made a mistake feeding her too many treat that night (tried to get her bath)...not sure which one was the cause of vomit, shes all fine now though...

so if we do decide to keep her inside until she's fully vaccinated, do we need to let her out the ex pen for exercising? right now she has a 4x6 feet area plus her crate? if we do let her out the ex pen would it be difficult to put her in ex pen later on? ahh I have so many question mark.

I understand your frustrations and questions! Its a difficult balance when you need to get your puppy socialized to the big wide world but at the same time its not safe to take her places!

If you decide to take her out into the world its all about calculated risk. Since she is small you have some ability to still take her places in your arms safely. But regarding playing in the grass or in a park, i would not recommend it. However, I have read about folks who use a bit of diluted bleach and spray it on and around the area where they take their puppies into the grass... maybe that is one way you can use the ex pen- spray the area you will set it up to sanitize it then put the pen there so the grass inside is 'safe'. Otherwise, maybe you can set the ex-pen up on your balcony if you have one?

We have an enclosed yard that had no dog in it for years so I was pretty lucky regarding having an outdoor space that is safe from parvo, but still its risky!!

Best of luck finding the right solution!

=[ today went to the vet, my puppy is diagnosed with coccidia...maybe I shouldn't take out her out to potty...I probably need to start paper training her indoor...so what at age or anything else you could do to prevent this happening so we could have her potty outside in the long term??

do you have a small "yard" or balcony? You can go get a couple of pieces of sod if you want to continue to train her to go "outside on grass" otherwise I'd use pads like the others mentioned.

If you just got the pup the breeder should be notified of the coccidia, it likely was in her body before you picked her up... the breeder can alert the recipients of the littermates and get them treated early.
