Question How long to walk my puppy?

Hi, my little Freckles has had all her shots and the vet gave her the clear to go outside tomorrow. Super excited! What i was wondering was how long should I walk her for? She'll be 12 weeks on Wednesday and she seems to have boundless energy! I know she'd be delighted to go on a really long walk but also know you shouldn't walk puppies for too long so as to not damage their bones.
How long is too long? I've come up with various answers on the net but don't know what is relevant to my pup. She's a cross between a Samoyed and a Springer Spaniel and is quite a big pup. She alreadly builds up an impressive speed when running around the garden and is not to shabby at jumping up on things either! How long do you fine people here reccommend I walk her for?

I would say fifteen minutes, three times a day.

That way she's getting her socialising and exercise, but in short bursts; otherwise she could damage her joints.

Thank you! Would one day of a longer walk do any harm? My local pet shop are starting a dog walking social club and they have a group just for puppies. This should be great socialisation for her but I'm not sure how long the walk would be, I'd imagine around 20 minutes and it would take me 5 minutes to walk there and 5 minutes back

I would say that may be a bit too long at this young age. Larger dogs do need to limit their exercise for the first year. Certainly what Tulip recommended, 15 mins 3 x day would be good to start and gradually increase the time week by week

thanks danesrus! I'm after sending off an e-mail to the pet shop anyway to see how long the walk is. if it's not too long I could carry her back home to cut off some of the walk or just leave the walk early! There's no puppy socialization classes in my area and don't really know many people with puppies, people with older dogs alright but not puppies so it would be really good for her to meet other puppies once a week if it's doable! But if it is too long then I won't go as the last thing I want to do is cause any damage!

There's no reason why you can't carry here there and back and carry her if the walk goes for more than 20 minutes. No reason why you can't leave early as I imagine she'l l get heavy! I too think that 30 mins over all is too much for such a young puppy.

She'd definitely get heavy after a bit! My 3 year old daughter would be coming with us as well so now that I think of it she wouldn't be up for a long walk anyway and until Freckles is used to walking on the leash I'm not going to be able to bring the stroller as I could see that turning into a complete and utter disaster!lol

One of those nightmare situations, young child, buggy, puppy, been there, done that, don't do it!!!!! Does your vet hold puppy classes or know someone who does? I advertise at the vets, dog groomers, kennels, maybe worth phoning round for recommendations?

I have to agree there; you can't really concentrate on puppy with a young child, you need to be praising and treating your pup whenever she sees something new and working on leashwork. It can be done, but it'll be hard work.

I'm from Ireland and there are a few around Dublin and Cork but Waterford, where I'm doesn't seem to have any. Have found a couple of trainers outside the city but I don't drive so even if they do have puppy classes they'll be no good to me.

Yeah, I had one of those situations before with a friends puppy. Even though my friend was walking the pup it was still an absolute nightmare!
