Ah yes, cats that walk into the room and cry loudly and cats that run away terrified are great "toys"! It's taken a long time for my bf's cats to get use to the dog (about 1 year), but just this month we've had Scardy Cat finally chase our dog from The Cats' Room and swat her on the butt as she left. Funniest thing ever, and our dog totally deserves it! Our other cat loves to create trouble for our dog by sauntering into the front room, staring at her and then crying loudly while sauntering back into the cat room. Evil kitty. These cats had never seen a dog before and they were 7ish years old when we got our dog.

All that to say, it does take time, having a safe haven for the cats is vital, as is spending time with them daily to help them relax, feel loved and confident enough to deal with this intrusion in their lives. Also, wear out your puppy any way you can each day and keep him tethered to you until he knows not to chase the cat (unless they're asking to be chased, like our trouble maker).

I have dogs and cats and recently got a new dog. He was AWFUL with the cats at first, but after about a week our most dog friendly cat had won Ben the dog around. About a week after that the next cat accepted him.

The last of the cats still doesn't like Ben very much but they do now tolerate each other.

When Ben first arrived he was going ballistic, barking and growling and jumping at the cats. For the first week or 2 I kept him on the lead whenever the cats were around, even in the house, and it worked out.

I would give it time and see how it goes.

I have three cats, my dog had gotten mad at one of them after she would scratch him for getting too close. He would mouth and growl at the cat usually chasing it into a corner. I had to show that "attacking" the cat was not allowed, and also the cat got more adjusted to him after a couple months. Now they tolerate each other.

My other older female is very passive and will not even scratch a dog to save here life. Their was no problems with her. Except nosing her a bunch.

A little later I got a young male cat that after a couple days they started playing together.
The dog still wants to interrupt any cat fights and doesn't like my parents cat(at a different house)or the neighbors cat.

Many dogs have to accept the cats, and will not always accept cats at first or outside cats. Cats are also more fearful of dogs at first most of the time.
I had a Malamute mix that killed a stray cat that ran up to her. She had high hunting instincts and was also never really a house dog. she didn't even like being in the house. Best to socialize as a puppy for such in many dogs.especially husky and spitz types and any dog bred for chasing and bringing down game.

It took a few months for my cat to really accept having Rhubarb in the house. My cat is 13 years old and it was a brand new puppy. She had lived with dogs when until she was about 6 then was an only child. She would hide for the first week upstairs then started venturing down and would hang out on top of the couch. Now is Rhubarb is on my lap and the cat wants to be on my lap she will walk over, hiss at the dog, then just sit on top of her. They also play and chase each other around the house. Its quite cute. Don't write off the dog yet, it will take a while for them to accept each other.
