Crate training is driving me CRAZY

Hi all.. I'm new to the forum. I have a new puppy that I have had for 10 days now. He is an 11 week old Presa Canario. I should say that this is not my first Presa, but I haven't had a dog in 3 years now. All of my previous dogs came crate trained, so though I have worked on training, never have I had the pleasure of crate training.

I have been doing everything that's been listed on every page that I read about crate training. Feeding in the crate, feeding yummy treats, crating for short periods of time, etc.. My puppy will go in the crate to eat, but since I close the door when I feed he stops eating early and starts whining. He whines even if I am 5 feet away from the crate. He's ok being in there until the door is closed, then the whining begins. I don't let him out while whining. I am losing patience I feel like there is no place I can put the puppy for some quiet time, and feel bad that he will cry anytime he is left in there when I have to leave the house. I haven't had to leave for more than 2 hours since getting him, but I know at some point I will have to leave for 3 hours. I hope someone can give some words of wisdom, since we are both going crazy with this. Thank you!

Start slower and use better (ie meatier) treats if you can, while starting off. No need to close the door-just in and out and in and out. Has a frozen kong helped? Have you played the 'find it' game where you hide treats or kibble dinner and he has to find them? Maybe you can put jackpot treats in the crate while playing.

It sounds like you're doing everything right though, some things do take time.

I haven't tried the find it game, do I hide the treats inside the crate? I will use some better treats and just keep the crate door open for a few days.. though I do have to go to a meeting on Thursdays so I will be gone for some hours maybe 4.. I'm already getting anxious about figuring out what to do that day!

Yup, you hide treats in the crate. Just practicing. It's one of those things that's unfortunate that it takes time but it's well worth it and it does get better!

Maybe there's someone you can have around for a bit, if you're really nervous? A dog-sitter?

I'd work on conditioning him to being in there and then condition him to the door closing. Break the closing of the door into smaller steps. A treat for if you reach toward the door then your hand backs away from the door. A treat for you touching the door...back away. Treat for touching the door and holding your hand on it longer..back away. Touch, hold, start to close the door a little bit...You get the picture Eventually, it'll build up to you being able to close the door.

For when you're at your meeting, is there a dog-proof room you can put him in while you're gone so you're not forcing the issue of the crate and undoing your work? The kitchen with a gate or a spare bedroom?
