Caregiver on vacation, 5 days alone?

I'm hoping you very knowledgeable dog owners could help me out. My boyfriend, who usually looks after my dog during the day, will be out of province for 10 days. I will be at work for 5 of those 10 days for 9 hours (including travel time).

I've been reading up on leaving puppies lone during the day for extended periods of time. The consensus seems to be that I should come home for a bit, or a puppy walker should come and visit around lunch time. The problem is, money is a little tight right now, and it would be quite difficult (though not impossible) for me to come home at lunch. Also, I'm new to my city, and don't know anyone that could check in on her for me.

My puppy will be 5 months old during the period of time in question. Also, she is being spayed on a Monday, and my boyfriend will be leaving on Thursday. I have a very strong feeling that everyone will suggest I find a way for her to not be alone all day. But, if there is anyway I could leave her alone for just these 5 days, that would be...well...convenient... help?

Because she is going to be fixed she needs to be supervised as much as possible. Is she ever crated or left alone at all right bow?

Honestly it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if you left her home for those 5 days without having someone check on her during the day but you would have to set aside a puppy proof area and expect for her to have an accident or 2 per day. But with her being spayed only 3 days before your boyfriend leaves makes it very risky. She won't even be fully recovered by that time and she really should be in someones care as much as possible. The only other thing you could do other than have someone check on her or you come home from work on your lunch hour is not get her spayed till someone can be there to take care of her.

yeah, i hear ya on the convenience thing... sometimes you just want to explain to them that it is only for such and such time and you'll be back etc etc... but i would really recommend against it... especially if she is getting spayed...

Thanks everyone. I guess I just needed the kick in the butt to do the inconvenient thing.

She is crate trained. We've left her alone for up to 3 hours before. There is also an area of the house I can barricade off so she won't be able to get at furniture or anything. Haven't decided which to do. It depends on whether someone comes to look in on her, or if I come home I suppose.

Thanks for the kick in the butt everyone.

If she wasn't getting spayed, I don't think leaving her alone for that amount of time at her age would be a big deal for a few days.

Because she will be post-sx, perhaps the vet would let you "day board" her while you're at work for those few days... drop her off before work and pick her up on your way home. Worth asking about.

Yeah, I agree. It wouldn't be too bad to leave her alone if you could block off a room or something for her to be in, but the spaying is a bit troublesome. Can you postpone the surgery until after your bf gets back?

I agree with the rest, postponing the surgery. You can seclude her in the kitchen I wouldn't recommend keeping her in a crate all day. Give her enough toy's to keep her entertain.
