Samoyeds have a very high cute level - be wary of that. |
And lots of grooming - a good brush every day, and I think this breed sheds too.
Only just noticed this, and it's hilarious. x3
I don't think I would mind grooming a dog at all. Sounds like something that would just be part of a daily routine, especially if you designate a time for such things from puppyhood onward.
Thanks for all the advice, folks.
I know that all dogs are individuals! That's why I like them. Once again, I'm trying to up my chances by getting some educated advice about what has worked in the past, not make myself a rigid list of what works vs. what doesn't. I know things don't work that way.
Does anyone have an opinion on Samoyed dogs?
I've heard they can be general trouble (i.e. wanderlust, digging, shedding) but are generally lovely family dogs and very nice companions as well as an active breed. Since I'm interested in trying both obedience and agility with a dog, as well as wanting a breed that thrives in a family situation, they seem like a good fit.
Most puppies of this breed seem to be around a thousand dollars-two thousand dollars, the latter of which is a little more then I'm allowed to spend on one puppy. Does anyone know what the least expensive gender is, dog-wise? Are males a little less expensive? What if I'm interested in a pet, not a show dog, and I plan on fixing my dog? Will that make any difference? I was under the impression it might.
I've also heard Samoyeds are a little tricky to train, but also that they respond very well to positive reinforcement, which is, consequently, the kind of training I use with our mini poodle and my favorite kind of training, as it seems to bring out the intelligence in a dog. I'd love to clicker-train a puppy, it would be really interested to see what kind of results I would get, I think.
Another thing- I'm searching for Samoyed breeders in the new england area, but most websites seem outdated. Does anyone have any sort of experience whatsoever with new-england-area Samoyed breeders? Or perhaps a little help locating a few that seem to still be breeding? I'd like to visit a breeder and see what their dogs are like.
