8 month old puppy has attitude, help!

My 8 month old puppy has grown up with another dog and used to let the other dog take sticks off him without issue but in the last 2 weeks he's totally changed his mind. It started with baring the teeth and snapping at him but he's now snarling and really going for the other dog. I've been praising my dog when the other dog has come near him when he hasn't reacted but it seems to be getting worse. It's only happening with this dog that he's known since he was 8 weeks. Please help, he doesn't show any other evidence of resource gathering or with any other dog.

Does your puppy growl/snap whenever the other dog comes near, or only when he has something? When your dog growls/bares his teeth, what does the other dog do? It's possible that your dog has perfectly valid complaint - something along the lines of "I'm big enough now to tell you I don't want you stealing my stuff" - which the other dog is ignoring, and so your dog has to up the complaint level. IF that's the case, it might work better if you supported your dog's right not to have stuff stolen from him, by encouraging the other dog away when he gets close enough to worry your dog. There's no law that says a dog has to accept any and all bad behavior from other dogs, and just because you can see what your dog is doing doesn't mean he's automatically at fault.

I got my pup Boone when he was five months old; at the time my BF's dog, Tara, was around 2. My puppy loved this older dog, but she ignored him and all his overtures. But if Boone left anything in his food bowl, she'd go over and snarf it down. When Boone was about 18 or 20 months, Tara went for his food bowl, and he objected. He did this a couple of times, and Tara stopped heading for his food bowl. After a while, they figured out some kind of compromise, not sure of the exact rules, but as long as Tara doesn't take his left-over food too soon after he's walked away, Boone won't object.

He pretty much only does it if he has a stick and the other dog is in his face. The other dog doesn't take a telling and will continue to annoy my dog until he snaps which is usually before I can distract my dog enough to dissolve the situation.

The other dog should be able to read my dogs warning signals but as he doesn't, I don't think I can continue having my dog crossing the line as I'm worried he might actually bite him.

He's never showed any signs of resource guarding, it's literally just this dog.

But also, he started with growling but because the other dog didn't learn to leave him, I feel like he's now missing out that step and going to proper snarling.
It's not really possible to ensure a park is clear of sticks so I'm worried I'm going to have to keep the dogs apart
