They are prone to becoming fearful with strangers and are very protective, therefore they need heavy socialization to avoid aggressiveness. What activities are you planning on doing with your shepherd? GSDs aren't couch potatoes. They need a fair amount of exercise and do very well in scent related sports, schutzhund, lure coursing, agility even, herding, and need a lot of mental stimulation as well as physical.
