Hi Community!

I have a few things going on, but mostly my questions are about my latest addition (3 mo old lab puppy). We currently have an 8 y/o terrier mix and a 3 year old lab, so we were adding to the family to give our current lab a buddy (terrier is not much for doing anything).

So far it’s been 5 days, and it’s been good. She has already gotten the concept of potty training (stands at the back door to go out), and does other wild puppy things like biting, chewing, etc. All in all, my older lab has been already so much happier, they play all day, curl up to sleep together- we’ve actually nicknamed her “mama” because she’s been really sweet to the puppy.

My questions Is regarding crate training. I was told puppies can only hold bladder for hours to months old (3 months, 3 hours), but I read on here elsewise. What is the standard for that? The previous owner was crating her already, but she still whines and barks and cries. My husband works second shift, so I take her out before I go to bed at 9, then she sleeps with me and the pups in bed until he gets home. He takes her out and 12am, then again at 1:30 before he goes to sleep. Then she gets crated with the other pups.

We try to take her out when she cries, but she cries every 2-3 hours to go out and goes to the bathroom every time. It’s also really hard to get her to settle down once she’s back in her crate after going potty. Today she went out at 2am, 5am, 7:30am, and when we tried to put her back in she squealed and squealed for 30 minutes. I had to come outside with her so she could get some energy out.

Does anyone have any insight or tips or advice? I’m running on low sleep and very overwhelmed at this point- any advice helps.

Thank you!
