I adopted an 11 year old male Shih Tzu on July 4 because owner was going into a nursing home. I was told the dog was house broken and wouldn 't go in the house. They trained the dog to go on the paper in a cage and the back yard . The dog usually goes on the paper for me, but has also started going on the carpet and my couch.
Is he too old to housebreak ? I'd like to use the cage for when I go out not for relieving himself. He may be still adjusting to new home. It's a new cage and I hope I can transition him to that.
Any ideas on how I should go about this? Thanks for all your thoughts.
Hi, welcome to the forum
Dogs are best trained when they are puppies. Try whenever your dog goes over to your front door, take him outside. He might get used to this, and things might click together. Outside might mean go to the toilet and whenever he needs to go for a wee or poo he may go to the door. This worked with my dogs, even the 5yr old Wheaten Terrier I adopted
I hope this helps...
Try reposting in the training section, you'll probably get more help there
