We are just a normal, average married couple in our late thirties, with an insatiable love for all animals, especially dogs. Wherever we have gone in our lives, we have always landed up helping an animal in need. We would always end up helping a dog in need or saving an abandoned dog – somehow we would find them or they would find us!
And then on our last vacation, we visited Koh Samui in Thailand. We were so happy to be on this beautiful island, but yet, so very sad to see hundreds of stray dogs, abandoned and roaming the streets and beaches, begging for food…most of them so thin and tired and usually with old or new injuries, or sick with mange. Whenever we saw a stray dog, we would run into the closest shop to buy dog food to feed it. This became a daily occurrence…every single day we found a dog that needed help in one way or another.
It was so heartbreaking, especially seeing an injured dog, hit by a motorbike or car, or mistreated and abused by a human, and not knowing where to take it, because medical treatment for them is not always available or accessible, as the veterinary clinic on the island is only open on certain days of the week and only during certain hours. Faced with no other alternative, we would often have to go to the nearest pharmacy and get bandages, antiseptic and whatever we could get, and do whatever we could do on our own to help the injured dog ourselves.
All of this made us realize what our calling and purpose in life is - It is to help these poor dogs who did nothing to deserve this terrible life they’re living.
Our mission is to provide a sanctuary for the stray dogs on the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and other neighboring islands in the Gulf of Thailand. To provide them with food, a safe place to sleep and medical care.
At the moment there is only one dog shelter on the island of Koh Samui, which is very inadequate to provide for the needs of these stray dogs. The biggest problem being that the island is a tourist destination, and the dogs in this shelter almost never get adopted. In other words, the dogs in this shelter are destined to spend the rest of their lives locked up in a small cage, receiving a life sentence of misery without doing anything wrong. Spending their days locked up, not able to socialize with other dogs, not able to run around, not able to be just a happy dog.
Also, they can only take in a small number of dogs, and when the shelter gets over crowded, they poison the dogs, who then die an agonizing death. So, basically, all these dogs are on death row, just because they were abandoned by their human owner.
We have saved up as much as we can, but need a lot more money to make this sanctuary a reality.
We need your help to raise the funds - $370,000 – which are required to buy the land, and build the facilities for the dogs. You can make the difference and be part of this project in the mission to save these stray dogs. So please help us by making a donation to our cause.
