Unhappy Ralphie issues making me sad :(

My name is Chris and I am from Co. Durham, England.

I got my dog Ralphie from the local kennels in June last year.

He was a scruffy thing. When we got him home he was running around barking in the back garden, we gave him toys to play with and he would just chew them up, He barked a lot and you couldn't play with him with his toys as he would growl at you and snack at you. I noticed that when I need to tell him off (Once he raided our bin and had stuff all over our kitchen) he does a "commando crawl" towards me and lies on his back and did a little wee I never shouted at him nor did I hit him, I just made him go to bed.

After a while Ralphie seemed to calm down, he liked a cuddle and used to sit on the sofa with us, sometimes on a night we would let him lie on the bed with us whilst we were reading but we would make him sleep in the kitchen when we were ready for "lights off". We were even able to play with him with toys, I can littlerally take something out of his mouth now. Me and my Finance work full time so for 2 days of the week he stays at her mothers. He is walked regularly and looked after well. Just before Christmas he growled and snacked at my finance's Brother (its unlike him, by this point we thought he had settled.). Since then he has growled at my little sister and has started to growl at me.

I have stopped him sitting on the sofa and he is no longer allowed to lie on our bed, but he now growls whenever I try to stroke him, he looks really nervous and I'm worried about it. Ralphie was like my best pal and I really do love him to bits, I had dogs as a kid and this is the first dog I have owned. Ashe is from the kennels we don't know anything about his backround...

What do I do? should I let him back on the sofa? Am I doing something wrong? I really worried and I really need some advise. Any Advice will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Chris

Welcome to the forum, Ralphie is a cutie!!!!

My first stop would be the vets office to rule out any medical issues like thyroid.

If all medical checks out to be clear then you will need to start counter conditioning him. There are lots of threads in regards to this in the training and behavior sections

ditto pawz... the first thing to do is a vet check. make sure you explain to your vet that you are looking for medical reasons for his behavior. this could be some sort of chronic pain or thyroid issue, sight/hearing loss... could be lots of things.

after your vet check, let us know, and we can start you exploring some behavioral causes for the behavior.

it is really important for you to understand that there are only two reasons for him to behave this way fear(you could also call it insecurity) or illness. and that his behavior is NORMAL in either instance, though it may not feel so to you. don't take it personally, he cannot explain how he feels to you, he has to demonstrate it.

Sounds like Ralphie might have some Resource Guarding issues. This can be worked with using positive training. Check out this thread!

Ditto the vet check as well.
