Newbie here with sweetest ever rescue Catahoula!

Hi there! new here to the forum and excited to share pictures of my newest baby, my rescue Catahoula mix, Cajun!!!

I have not had a dog before so this is a very new experience. We have had him for a week and a half and I think his separation anxiety has finally quieted down and he is so incredibly smart. I've already learned so much here on these forums and I look forward to learning more. Love my new baby!!!

Welcome to the forum, cajunsmom! Cajun is an absolutely gorgeous boy! Those first couple weeks can be Kind of crazy, but it settles down shortly.

For the forum regulars: anyone want to take bets on how long it takes pkelley (our resident 'houla fan) to find this thread?

Yes! I saw posts from her and am waiting for some catahoula words of wisdom. I'm not sure what else Cajun has mixed in him but he looks catahoula all day long and he is soooo incredibly smart. He picks up on stuff right away. And he is crazy/fascinated with all our squirrels and tries to "tree" them. He was rescued from a high kill shelter and I feel so incredibly lucky to be his "mom". He is soooo very loving and he has definitely decided that he is MY dog.

OHHHHHH.....speechless....sooooo pretty/handsome, and of course smart, that's a houla, lol. Here is Mojo who was with me for 10 days last week....he is a brindle, and our family has two females! And our two black/whites! Yours looks similar to Addy....muscle plus!
I love the look of Cajun, and that's a great name! You can connect with other houla lovers at Catahoula facebook and Catahoula rescue.

BEWARE, they are like potatoe chips...can't have just one of them, lol.
Socialize ALOT with children and take Cajun to training as soon as he settles in for some weeks...very important. If bored he may destroy stuff, remote controls, pillow, etc. They like to look out the window all day. Micro chip for sure due to prey drive. All catahoulas need a JOB to do in the family, like pick up laundry on the floor, herd cats, etc. So excited for you. Don Abney has a great book but ignore the dominance stuff. They are also very similar to Blue Lacy's so you might want to research them too.

pkelley - your 'houlas are gorgeous! I love the merle colours so much! my family is from Mississippi and northern LA so it just seemed natural/perfect that we found him on the rescue site that we did. We are getting ready to take him to training in 2 weeks as a class starts up soon. He and I are both ready for it! :-) We have a great big huge picture window in our living room and he most definitely sits on the couch for a long time (as long as I am there and I don't get up) and "patrols" the yard and neighborhood from there. He is such a good good boy, not a chewer at all and hardly ever barks. And he is micro-chipped, our rescue people did that for us. I love my baby!!! I seriously feel like I have a new child in the family and I'm always showing off his pictures to my friends (I'm sure they are sick of hearing about him by now) and I talk about him all the time!

Cajunsmom,
I am laughing soooo hard right now reading your post! You have now officially been ensnared by a catahoula! And it will get worse, that's why I gave you the facebook and houla rescue sites so you can talk with other houla "fans", lol. Ask anyone on DF, I am cathoula nuts. It's so true what they say, the houla owns his person, not the other way around. I can just picture your pup sitting at the window! Chloe does that all day too. It's her job. Look at the Hyperbole and a Half website, our Addy is mentally and physically stunted and she is the Simple Dog. Chloe is the helper dog - You'll be rolling on the floor. Gotta go, am dog sitting a doxie and 3 shih's right now and have two on my lap. Talk later.
