Wonderful pitties! New people from the same area!

I'm curious, are there bells on Melon's collar for any particular reason? And are those gps collars?

The bells are bear bells. We have lots of big critters like cougar and bear here, so it's a good safety precaution. It also lets me keep track of him when he's off leash in thick brush.

The collar is an electronic collar. Another safety precaution. I keep it on just in case we run into such a critter. Melon has very good recall and will recall off deer and rabbits, but I'm always worried we might run into something that could kick his butt and that would be when recall would fail. I actually used it once when we came around a bend and were about 20 feet away from an angry mama cow with her calf. Melon charged, ignored my come command, so I zapped him and he turned before he made it to the cow. I'd much rather zap him than have him trampled to death!

Riddle is never really off a leash, so I don't use an e-collar for her.

I didn't even think of bear protection. I'm in the city, and the most we have to worry about is coyotes nibbling on our dachshund. They're brave here, and will chase dog walkers. I just carry a mini air horn in case my 35lb dog can't scare them off.

Those sound like very good ideas when you're out in the open.

They'd have to be pretty brave coyotes to mess with two 50+ lb dogs. The coyotes never bother us. Even if they did, I suspect Riddle would make short work of them anyway. But bear and cougar, really even the mule deer in mating season or with fawns, could do major damage to a dog. The e-collar makes me feel better about Melon's safety off leash.
