New dog and new here

Have new rescue Cocker. Emma is about 4 yrs old and pretty energetic. My last elderly Cocker died 8 months ago. I am far from young and wonder if she is too much dog for me. I intended to get an older dog but things worked out this way and she is a nice girl. We walk about 2 miles a day. Have some issues with walking her and her habit of growling but that is for later. Hope to get some guidance for making her into a well trained dog.

Hi Sharon,

Welcome to the Dog Forum! Congrats on your new dog. I have a special place in my heart for rescues, too.

We can definitely help you with tips on walking her and figuring out what is causing her growling. I'd like to suggest that you check out our Dog Training and Behavior section. Please create a new thread there as you'll get more responses to your questions.

About the growling, you definitely don't want to discourage Emma from growling because this is her way to tell you verbally that she's uncomfortable with a situation. Dogs that are punished for growling end up snapping and biting. A much better approach is to figure out what's causing her to growl and addressing that issue.

Good luck and welcome!
