I would get her tested for worms first. If a pup is truly overweight you will see weight gain in more places than just the stomach, with fat build up in the armpits, humped on the back of the neck, and along the spine.

Many pups go through chunky phases because like children they go through growth spurts. Being overweight can be really hard on a growing pup, but the good news is that she'll naturally move back to a healthy growing weight if you can curb the overfeeding and get her into a good, age-appropriate feeding routine.

Good luck!

Keep her away from your friends Mother!! seriously, don't let anyone other than you be in charge of her eating habits! an overweight dog is an unhappy dog. Welcome to the forum

Does she get enough exercise? Make sure she does and feed her twice daily. Tell your friends not to overfeed her.

Does her belly look like this?

If so, she's fine. Puppies have fat bellies, it has nothing to do with your friend's mom feeding her, though that should be discouraged. She's not getting fat, puppies have very high metabolisms. However, you should make sure to check for worms just in case.
