My Intro and Questions :)

Hello my name on here is franticfur, i'm new to the site. A little bit about me: I have a beautiful 10year old Shiba Inu named Kirda(keer-uh). Kirda has been awarded her CGC award and has gone through agility training, we are big on sports. I work at a petshop, it's great I learn about animals everyday. So recently my roommate lost his dog. We are now currently looking for a Belgian Malinois, pet quality not show quality. I was wondering if any of you fellow Belgian fans know of any rescue,breeder,re-homing options? I live in Florida and have checked pet-finder and craigslist so i'm not sure how else I would go about finding one. I am well aware of what the breed is and know for sure that this is the dog we want and will be willing to work with him.

If you're really prepared for this, lurk around your local rescues and pet finders. I bet there are some real gems out there where the previous owners simply got themselves in way too deep with a high-energy, driven breed. It happens often enough that people go out and purchase a very high-quality dog with every good intention for it and simply cannot keep up. Just a matter of waiting til one pops up. I'm sure you could even score a show quality one if you were patient about it.

Welcome!

As far as I know Malis are mainly bred for sports and/or work, so you probably wont get a dog bred just for pet purpose.
The breed is not as divided in Show/pet-only lines and work lines as labbies for example, as far as i know.
Not all Malis are compartible with other dogs and I met some really crazy ones with very short tolerance for almost everything...highly sensible and highly focused when they have a task.
You sure you want that? there so many teenage Malis that end up in shelters and rescues, because their first owners don't know how to meet their needs.

how about start your research for the breed here.
try to talk with different breeders and handlers as much as possible and find out if this type of dog is fitting your lifestyle before getting a puppy. Sometimes dogs get returned to their breeders, so you can find older dogs there too, when you ask.

Thanks for the help guys. I am well aware of the breed, no research needed it's up in my head already. I plan on doing everything with this dog so in addition to searching for the right pup I am also looking at what dog classes/sports I have in my community. The only luck I have had in my search is the occasional craigslist puppy, which is fine but still looking.
