Moving my 2 dogs across country

Hi!

So, I have 2 husky Mixes. One, Sabakka, is 5 and the other, Wiley, is three. For the last few years, we have lived in a house with a fenced in yard, so the dogs have had a ton of freedom. They hate when we have to chain them, which doesn't happen often. Sabakka is really laid back and won't run away, unless it's to protect Wiley. Wiley is a rescue and is very skittish. He has run away several times.

We never planned on moving, but the opportunity for my husband and I has come up for us to move back to our home town. I'm really nervous about the move because of the dogs. I've done my best to research options, but is flying or driving better for a high stress dog? Our vet recommended flying, with medication (it's roughly 10 hours to fly). My research suggests driving is better, which could take 2 weeks.

My other concern is once we get there. We'd have to stay with my parents. They have two dogs, so what is the best way to introduce the dogs to each other. They don't have any fencing. Their dogs, along with all the neighborhood dogs, just wander around. Sabakka could handle it, but any suggestions for Wiley?

@hkvik has done quite a bit of research on this topic. He might be able to give you some guidance.

With large dogs they wouldn't be able to fly in cabin with you. I wouldn't consider flying unless driving was really not an option.

Hi @Jmspringer82,

I've done a lot of research when it comes to flying with dogs and spoken to others that have done it. In my case, it was a 17 hour flight with a fairly nervous dog. I ended up not doing it at the end though.
My recommendation is to drive, not fly. The major reason of driving is that you can train and desensitize your dog to all aspects of it so that it hasn't have to be a traumatic event for the dog at all. It might even be fun. With flying, you can do none of that. The dog will be alone, without owners, in a very scary situation for 10-12 hours. Using medicine is a very dangerous idea and most airlines will not allow it for the high risk of the animal dying during the flight. If you are flying to another country, if the vet that checks the animal on arrival suspects that the dog is medicated, he won't let the animal enter. So no medicine. I'm sure your vet is great on other aspects, but when it comes to this, if you are still thinking about flying, get opinion from another vet or better, a vet. behaviorist and I'm sure they'll repeat what I said about meds.
So, if you have the option of driving, my advice is to go for that.
