Hubby does not want a dog. I do!

Hi,
First time to this forum. It looks fab!
I need some advice please. I am married to a wonderful man and we have two girls aged 5 and 6.
My daughters and I would love to get a dog but my husband is against the idea. I grew up with dogs on our farm and my dad trained border collies so have always wanted a collie of my own.
I don't work so have time to devote to a dog especially now that ours girls are at school. We have a large garden suitable for a dog to play in and I am a keen walker and love the idea of getting out in the woods with a dog for a long walk.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation and what was the outcome? Did u get your dog?!
My husband never had a dog growing up and is quite house proud and is put off by the idea of being tied to a dog.
Anything I can do? It has got to the stage where I can barely bring up the subject of dogs and he closes down. He is great in every other way!

Looking forward to any advice anyone has for me.

Why exactly does he not want a dog? Is it because he thinks the breed you're thinking of won't be a good fit? I have to agree with him on that one. Is he afraid of dogs?

Welcome!

That's a really difficult situation to say the least! I understand your passion to have your own dog and to make the dog part of your family. I think it is an excellent idea to have a companion when you are running/walking also.
Have you identified the MAIN reason your husband doesn't want a dog? Is it more "responsibility", the finances, a dog in the house, fear for your children, "sharing" you with another or just that he has never had a dog? Could you foster a couple of older dogs before adoption so he can get used to the dog in the house and what that would entail??? That way you aren't committed for lifetime and maybe he can work it through. It's so hard to give input as I don't know your husband....but I sure do empathize with you...a lot.

I was in the same boat with my bf, and we worked out a deal where he got to pick the dog (I had veto power) since he was concerned about his cats and I didn't want any dog he disliked anyhow. He also felt better watching me obsess over dog-related materials (I spent a year of seriously researching care and training before I ever got Bree). He loves to tell people how he was the one who found "my" dog

But mom always laughs because our first serious talk wasn't about religion or kids or politics but when I was getting my dog. He wanted to wait until his cats died (they were 6 years old when we were talking about it!), and I had already waited 2 years for my dog. It was a relatively tense conversation, but we got it worked out.

I had that problem, too but it was because my husband's family dog had passed away and he was still very sad about it. We got Zoe about a year after his family dog passed. I told him we were going to the shelter to just look at the dogs and I ended up falling in love with Zoe. It was seriously love at first sight and I had to have her. I talked him into it but we don't regret adopting her.

Yep!! It works!

Edit ~ I didn't even take the husband when I went to get Phoenix. I just showed him her picture and said I was going to go see her.

That's tough. I don't think I could ever be with someone who wasn't into dogs...or animals. I love them too much. You have to find out why he doesn't want one. Period. Otherwise it will never get anywhere.
