Hi!

Hi!

I'm adopting a deaf Australian Shepherd puppy on Friday, so I figured I would join this forum! I've always loved dogs, but I haven't had one for nearly 3 years. I'm really looking forward to having a canine friend again, and can't wait until he arrives.

Hi there! I saw your avatar and wondered if he was deaf. Is he a lethal white (double merle)? He is super cute! I've looked into a lethal white rescue in my area and it is something I would like to do someday.

He is a double merle. I was originally looking for an Australian Shepherd or Border Collie breeder but somehow stumbled upon him, and couldn't pass him up! He's just precious.

So pretty. Are you going to use hand signals for commands?

He IS precious.

Once you get into the habit of not talking to your dog, training a dead dog isn't really any harder than training a hearing dog.

Anyway, welcome, and I'd love to see pictures of your dog as he grows. Have you picked out a name yet?

Really I would have thought dead dogs were impossible to train. Sorry I couldn't resist.

Thank you! I am going to use hand signals with him. I used to play with the idea of hand signals with a Siberian Husky I used to own, and he seemed to pick them up well, so I'm hoping this little guy will too.

I haven't decided on the name completely (I'm waiting until I meet him) but it's a possibility he will end up with the name Marshmallow, or Mallow, haha. Who knows.

Double merle is the common phrase for homozygous merles, or dogs with 2 copies of the merle gene (the result of breeding 2 merles together). Double merles commonly (not all, but if I'm correct, 25% of each litter) have disabilities, such as deafness or blindness, or both.
