Unhappy HELP - Advice needed !

Hello All, I wondered if you could give me some opinions about something I am struggling with. I volunteer at a rehoming kennels. Problem is that I am not certain that rehoming the dogs is being treated as No1 priority. I started to have my concerns over this as I have been there over 6 months and they have only rehomed 1 dog. They do not have a website, just a chat forum which is hard to use and find on the net. I have mentioned that I could help them setup a website but they seem to think the forum is fine. Not all the dogs are on there either. There are plenty of rehomable dogs there that have been there for years litterally. I found a potential owner for a sweet little dog but it felt like they were putting obstacles in the way. Eventually they told me that the possible owner was too far away even though I had offered to travel the distance at my own cost to do a home visit. Now I find it really hard to go there each week and see his little face knowing he could have had a forever home. These dogs NEED homes and I think with a bit more marketing they would find them. Also they have many dogs given to them with behaviour issues, these dogs will NEVER leave the kennels, and many of them live in crates, being let out about 3 times a day for food and poop. Now the biggest thing I am struggling with is should these dogs live a life like that? Is it fair? Please let me know what you think?

Is this a non profit organization?
If so, are they receiving funding from the government?
Sounds like they have to keep so many dogs to receive help. Makes not sense not to adopt them out to forever homes for any other reason.

They are non profit. I think perhaps it was started with all good intentions but am not sure about it all really. I think I am going to ask them if they would like me to help set up website etc and see what their reaction is. I think they will be negative and in which case I dont think I can keep going there to see these dogs with little hope of rehoming :-(
Any thoughts on the agressive dogs?

Unfortunately there really is not much you can do. They are feeding them and caring for them. Is it fair..no way, but what can you do. I worked at a county shelter for over a year, it is very heart breaking. If you want to do the best you can for them then continue going to show them love. You just have to know that they may never get a home. So is it better for them to be where they are or in a possible bad home?? or possibly worse..fending for themselves on the street??? It is always a hard one when it comes to right and wrong....better or not..

Maybe I am just not cut out for it. Before I worked there I always thought that no dog should be put to sleep but I see them and think maybe it would be best for them.
Thanks for your thoughts x

Could you encourage your shelter to see if Best Friends Animal Society (Dogtown) would be interested to take any of these aggressive dogs? I can't see how someone who really cares about the animals welfare would force them to spend the rest of their lives in your shelter's confined conditions!

I know what you mean Karen. I had to euthanize a lot of dogs and cats when I worked at the shelter. Some I truly felt were better off humanely put to sleep. Others I could not put down...eg pit bulls seized..stayed until the courts sentenced them to death. I have not stepped foot in a shelter since working there. Hurts to much...I will foster on my own or help the rescue group.

This is something my partner and I want to do one day... unfortunately my big boxer boy wouldnt be happy about foster dogs coming to stay!! I still do not know weather to keep going to them as it feels like I am just doing the chores (which I have no problem doing) but I need to be working towards the ultimate goal, to rehome the ones you can.....and be kind to the ones you cant and give them a dignified end. Crazes me xxx

Are you sure they are not animal hoarders? That's what it sounds like to me. I know that some masquerade as animal sanctuaries but they never re-home the animals they just hold on to them even when the situation gets out of control.
