Hi! I'm Katherine, 26 years old, mother to three girls ages 6, 4 and 4 months. I'm currently a stay at home mom (previously full time with an oil and gas company). My husband works in the medical field and we're buying our first home on a beautiful fenced acre next month!
We have two adopted cats, Smokey and Flower, and a 50ish pound pit mix, Willie.
Prior to becoming pregnant with our last daughter, I volunteered with a Facebook page that goes into our local high-kill shelter and evaluates, takes pictures of and networks animals on the "Code Red", or 48 hour, euthanasia list. On one of my outings there I met Willie. He was to be euthanized for kennel cough, which runs rampant in this particular shelter. He was also underweight and had blisters and a terrible rash on his stomach, paws and nose. He was unfortunate in that he came in at a time when the shelter was overflowing, and was only given 24 hours to be pulled by rescue or an adopter. I vigilantly watched his Facebook thread, praying someone would step up for him. He had to have a tag by 7am, and by 6am I knew he wasn't going to get one. I'm lucky to have a husband who, although he is not much of a dog person, understands that I've loved and worked with dogs all my life, and he agreed that we could adopt Willie.
I picked him up a few hours later and took him straight to the vet. He went through four months of antibiotics and steroids to cure his kennel cough and calm his raging skin infection, and now he's happy, healthy and well-adjusted.
He is amazing with all of my children and gets along swimmingly with our two cats. His only fault is that he was clearly not well-socialized as a youngster and does not know how to play with other dogs well. Long story short, he's kind of an obnoxious a-hole when he first meets another dog, and thus I am turning to this forum to hopefully talk with people whose dogs have similar issues and get some much needed advice.
Nice to meet everyone!
