Hello from Oregon!

Greetings! I grew up with dogs always as a kid, but since "growing up" and moving out, I haven't had the opportunity to have a dog of my own. I have been really missing having a dog around, and while I do have two ferrets, it's just not the same as having a large fuzzbutt to take camping and on long walks and just hug (ever tried to hug an eager ferret? lol). So my boyfriend and I have finally decided that in a few months we will bring home a dog. Likely after mid-summer so we can give ourselves enough time to save for the initial price of the dog, toys, accessories, food, and vet visit, as well as research everything we need and give ourselves time to find the perfect dog, rather than acting on impulse.

Over the past few months we've been slowly gathering information, deciding what breeds we each enjoy and what would make the best fit for our needs. I have decided that I want to train the dog to be a service dog for my anxiety (it's currently starting to interfere with my work and that is not okay). With that research, we narrowed down our needs some more. We initially thought to rescue, but as a service dog I feel I should know the dog's history so I know if it has any triggers that would otherwise fail it for training, so we're starting to look into reputable breeders as well.

We plan to feed a raw diet, as that is what my ferrets are fed so might as well kill two birds with one stone, it's useful because the dog can get the large bones, and the ferrets get the small bits.

Anyway, I am so glad I found this forum! Even with constant google searches and books to read, nothing beats just talking to people and gathering information from conversations. I look forward to participating in the community

Hello and welcome! One thing you mentioned about the raw diet, I think you should look into local laws. I've read some things that service and therapy dogs are sometimes banned from having raw diets because of fear of some sort of foodborne illnesses in raw food. It's a bit ridiculous but definitely something to consider down the line. You made a great choice to join the site and really do your homework!

I never thought of that! Thank you for mentioning. Do you think that only counts for therapy dogs because they see so many ill patients, or does it include personal service dogs?

I'm actually unsure. I do know I read that on the Pet Partners site for therapy and AAT dogs a while ago but it might be true for service dogs too. These laws are always changing and a bit confusing, as well as regional. We've had several discussions about service, ESA and therapy dogs on this site about the confusing allowances and rules they can't break. I think most of them are on the general or working dogs board if you want to take a look.
