Hi hi! Just joined the forum today, looking forward to many discussions and stuff about (as Rudyard Kipling so eloquently put it) man's first friend: the dog!
I'm a dog groomer in my thirties, currently grooming out of my home; I'm also currently back in college (full time student) for a health-science degree to become a healthcare professional upon graduation/licensing. I haven't shown dogs in many years, but after graduation I'm looking to get back into it.
My canine companion is a little tiny black mutt; she's a Chihuahua mixed with Dachshund, though you won't ever hear me call her a "chiweenie." Her name is Cricket (honestly, when I first saw her, she was half-a-pound of shiny black puppy and seriously looked like a bug, LOL) and she's a delightful little dog! She has some health issues including bone density problems (which has led to some breaks and bone deformity) as well as hip and knee problems (bilateral luxating patellas). I also have two rescue cats; one is a Persian who was dumped by her former owner at the grooming salon I used to work at, and the other is a Munchkin kitty I adopted from a shelter. Both are tortoishell, and both are awesome!
Once I graduate I plan to take steps to acquire my dream dog: an Afghan Hound. I admit I've always loved the look, but I bought the lie that Afghans are stupid and figured they were not the breed for me. OH BOY WAS I WRONG. Once I began interacting with Afghans (some as grooming clients, others at dog shows and events where breeders were kind enough to take time to let me get to know their dogs) I discovered that they have the temperament, personality, intelligence, indepenence, EVERYTHING I could want in a dog!!! I love grooming them, I am consistently impressed with their lack of regard for human authority (I love my little mutt dog but I prefer the attitudes of my cats, honestly! My little Cricket is a delight but she's so...obedient and eager to please. I may sound insane but I don't love those qualities in a dog!) and they are the most regal, royal (and secretly clownish) animals I've ever known. I am just obsessed with Afghans and cannot wait to own one of my own; I'd like to hold out for an Afghan (preferrably male) that is decent enough to show; I'll never have the time or inclination to heavily campaign a dog but attending a handful of shows each summer with my Afghan would be heavenly. And yes, I'm planning to build a bathing/grooming room in my future post-graduation home; I've become rather handy with basic DIY remodeling projects. In short, I plan to kind of sculpt my life around my future Afghan Hound.
I'm also a freelance artist (read: STARVING) specializing in pet portraits and breeder logos. I paint (sometimes), can sculpt (when in the mood), and am not totally helpless in digital mediums (where I do most of my logos/portraits). I specialize in drawing horses and dogs, but I can handle literally any species.
So...yeah, that's me in a nutshell.
