Hello

Well here in Greece there are a lot of problems that cause this great amount of stray animals.

First there are only a little shelters and those existing shelters need more financial resources. They are always 'fully booked' with all kinds of dogs and cats.

Neutering is another problem.A lot of people let their dogs mate because it would be oh so nice for the female dog to experience pregnancy.
And the puppies are the victims of the whole situation.

Some people just dump the puppies on the road and drive away........Once the puppies are not cute anymore.

The situation is really bad..

I wish you much luck and love with your dog!
Yes, the problem is constant. Many people do not believe in spaying or neutering their dogs. Some men believe that if they do that on their male dog it is like doing it to themselves so they don't do it (trust me I've seen it, and not from stupid people, but from smart, educated men, go figure), other are just plain stupid, 'cause they get pets from pet stores then a neighbor little girl/boy will say "oh, I want one too, will you mate them and give me one?" and that is how it all begins and the end is puppies being let after midnight outside of shelters, on the street, etc...

The problem is big, not many counties help out the shelters with financial backup. Most shelters work only with donations and free help from people.

We are always hoping this will one day get better. Who knows though?

Thanks for the insight. I'm sure it can be very disheartening to see so many unwanted animals walking around. I don't know the statistics on sheltered animals in the US but I'd think it's rather high. We just don't see them since they are sheltered and...
