Hello from Florida!

Hi! My name is Jess and I just stumbled on this forum! I am a massive animal lover and have never not owned a dog.

My personal first dog was my pound puppy named Scarlett. She is now 7 and has some crazy Auto-Immune disease that makes her have to take steriods for the rest of her life. So she has become a little bit of a porker. This is an older picture of her but you can see how dang cute she is!

My youngest dog is Roxie. She is about 2. I found her running up the road when she was just a baby and never found the person she belonged to. I fell in love instantly. She is a lab mix but takes mostly off of the lab. Very scatter brained. But smart. We just started taking Agility classes and we start our 2nd one in September. 1st class was all flat work and she seemed to be getting it. I have to work on my cordination! Lol.

I worked at a big pet store as a dog trainer for 4 years. I loved working with the dogs and some of the people but really the people just got old. I haven't worked there in 2 years and I am just now getting to the point again where I get excited to work with my own dog.

Nice to meet everyone and I would love any information or help I can get!

Florida is a great place to have dogs. When Scarlett was younger we use to go to tons of dog parks and things. Not so much anymore though. I want to get Roxie out to the beach as she never has been (Scarlett LOVES the sand HATES the water) but it is such a pain to load up the car, load up the dog, drive to the beach, spend a few hours there, then load everything back up, get the car disgusting, and come home. I know sounds so pitiful but one day I would love to do it!

Oh TheLauren that's great! There are a lot of outdoor things to do here, and that is of course if you can stand the heat.

Watch out for critters outside. The biggest one I deal with on a pretty regular basis are Bufo toads. Big, ugly, nasty things that are extremly poisonous to dogs. And of course our wonderful posionous snakes, and the alligators... well Florida is a little bit of a wild place. Lol

Yikes. I'll need to research up on poisonous animals and plant life. I have 3 acres, and wouldn't want her to get sick.

what a Black Beauty!!!!

Please be careful in the heat with a black coated dog, you are probably well aware.
Are you fenced in any part of your property?

My black dogs don't spend a ton of time outside unless I am with them, and if we do spend time outside I bring ample water for the dog (They usually will get mine too. Lol).

The thing to look out for in Florida is also walking dogs on concrete. Asphalt and sidewalk get VERY hot in the summer here. I once had to chase as dog that got lose from a Petsmart. She ran all over the road for over an hour. Came back with next to no skin on her pads.
