Hello Fellow Dog People! :D

Hi everyone! My name is Meghan. I'm from Vermont and like everyone here, I love dogs!

I am currently studying animal science at UVM. I have Asperger's syndrome and one of my biggest interests is animals- particularly animal behavior. I decided to join this forum by looking in the behavior and training sections and seeing that the general consensus is that you all agree that dominance theory is basically not true, which I very much appreciate. I'm so sick of arguing with people who tell me about how awesome Cesar Millan is or jump to the conclusion that any "problem behavior" is the dog's attempt at overtaking the household when psychologists, biologists, behaviorists, and trainers have all disproven dominance theory not only in dogs but in wolves with scientific research. I enjoy studying dog behavior and positive reinforcement training.

I have a 7 (going to be 8 on April 16!) year old black cockapoo named Mia. I love her so much. She is so much more than a pet- she's my baby, sister, and best friend all at once.

Dogs I would like to have in the future include: a female border collie mix (but not a bc x husky- I've seen a lot of those lately and I don't think a husky would be a good dog for me), a male pit bull terrier mix, a female Australian Shepherd, and maybe a female French bulldog, female cocker spaniel, and male English bulldog. All those dogs would be rescues.
I want to get a female cockapoo as a puppy from a breeder and maybe a Coton de Tulear from a breeder also. I'm all for rescue and adoption but I don't see anything wrong with buying dogs from reputable breeders if you're looking for a very specific dog or if your particular circumstances don't allow for you to adopt (ie my mom and sister are allergic to dogs and our local shelters didn't have any hypoallergenic dogs so we got a cockapoo from a breeder, and she's the perfect dog for us <3 )

I'm interested in lure coursing and flyball but my dog is getting a little too old for sports and has arthritis in one of her legs from an injury she received as a puppy so she's a pretty low energy dog.

My two life goals are:
1) To be as successful with my band, Dented Personality, as possible. Whether that means we break up tomorrow or go on to become internationally famous, I don't know, but we have a lot of talent and potential and I think we could do it if we tried.
2) To work in animal welfare until I one day have the money and expertise to open my own shelter for dogs, rabbits, and freshwater fish.

Besides dogs I love music, music theory, playing guitar, rabbits, fish-especially Betta splendens, reading, hiking, and nordic skiing.

And that's me! I'm so excited to join this forum!

Welcome!
I think you'll fit in quite well here. Many of us have similar views, especially when it comes to canine behavior and training!

Thank you for the welcome! And I'm so glad about the similar views. I probably shouldn't talk about my views on dominance theory or "The Dog Whisperer" because I'll probably end up saying a lot of things that I shouldn't and would normally filter xD
I also realize that I can get a little defensive about the whole rescue thing because I'm very involved with animal welfare on the internet and get attacked when I say that my dog wasn't adopted or that I don't have problems with reputable breeders. After poking around this forum though I've found that a lot of people here are breeders so I don't think that I'll have to worry as much about that either. It seems like this is a very open minded, accepting place. There usually seems to be a lot more controversy when it comes to animals, pets, and especially dogs.
