Hi everyone. My name is Becky and I live in Edmonton AB.
I work part time at a PetSmart as a dog trainer, and I've been there for 2 1/2 years. I also work part time as a desk attendant at a library, I just started that in January.
I don't have a dog yet, but I'm hoping this year I'll be able to get one *finger crossed*. I believe very strongly in responsible ownership so even though I've worked as a dog trainer I felt that I wasn't able to responisbly own a dog.
I do, however, have four cats that I treat like dogs.
Jitzu is the eldest and came to me with lots of issues at 1 1/2. She's now 6 and I have used a lot of my positive training ideals to help her overcome most of her probelms. She's now a wonderfully sweet (at least to me) girl.
Torri is our princess. She's 3 years old and very timid. I've been working with her a lot lately to try and boost her confidence with people and our other cats and she's coming along great.
Doran is 2 1/2 and he was my bottle baby. I raised him from 10 days and he's definitely a Momma's boy. His favorite trick is high five, and I'm trying to teach him to shake his head 'no' for a trick thread on another forum. We're working on it. He also does really well at stay and touch.
Muffin is the 'baby' of the family. He's just over 2. He's also the biggest and the most outgoing. Muffin is a Certified Therapy Cat. He's working on learning a 'go to your basket and stay there' cue, hopefully I'll be using that with a kids literacy program soon! He also loves touch and we're working on shake.
All four cats know sit, touch, off, come, and leave it.
When it comes to dog training I'm a huge fan of Patricia McConnell, clicker training, and a certain wonderful video trainer on youtube. I strongly believe that almost every issue a dog has can be best modified using positive training and that positive training will always give you the most trustworthy balanced pet.
