Hello from Belgium

Wow! A dog forum! GREAT! Glad I found you guys!!

Iím originally from Florida but have been living in Belgium for the past 22 years. I met my Norwegian husband here and together we have settled near Brussels and have two teenage sons. Iím a Pilates instructor and I also work with glass in my basement studio.

My Border Collie Vinny passed away in March of 2009 at the age of 12 and I found that I just couldnít take the stillness his passing brought to my day at home so we decided as a family to take on a Finnish Spitz puppy. Iíve had dogs all my life. Iíve trained my own dogs and have competed in obedience competitions so I thought weíd be the right family for a FSÖ.WRONG!!!! I wound up with a very dominate (Iíd like to add that he is not aggressive), assertive male. He is beautiful and in his own way very sweet but our personalities just arenít well matched. Plus he really longs for more canine company and we are definitely a one dog family. A week ago I contacted the breeder, as I promised I would if things didnít work out, and she helped me to find a great home for him with a family in France who breeds Huskies and Finnish Spitz. He will have a lot of other dogs to play with and a little Ďharemí all his own and I will find a dog that suits my personality better. So the story has a happy ending although Iím sure Iíll shed some tears when I hand him over. Until then Iím just enjoying him and having fun with him as always.

Right now we are looking for another breed more suited to our family but will take our time to find the right dog this time.

Welcome to the forum!

We are pretty good here about suggesting breeds. If you want we could throw some suggestions your way if you could give us a bit about what your looking for?

Things like:

adult size, activity level, what you want to do with him/her ect...

I can also suggest this website,Animal Planet :: Guides :: Dog Breed Selector its pretty good, mind you not perfect!

Thank you for the reply and the links. Yes, I've had a good look around the forum and I can see that there are quite a few knowledgeable people here.

With regards to what Iím looking for: Size = medium to large (by large I mean Labrador)

I'm pretty active but Iím wary of dogs with high drives or nervous energy. I have lovely fields and forests to walk in around my home and I have several routes of 4 to 6 kilometres that I love to walk or jog everyday so exercise is not a problem. Also, it is possible to walk with groups of other dog owners in a nearby wooded park. I want a dog as a companion for me and plan to take him/her out and about with me on a daily basis. Here in Belgium you can have your dog with you in restaurants, cafes, on public transport etc. as long as they are well behaved so socialization and introduction to new environments will not be a problem at an early age. Also, my schedule is fairly flexible and Iím only out three mornings each week so I have lots of time to devote to training and seeing after my dogís needs. Having said that, I am looking for a dog that is easy to have around. I want my dog to enhance my life not take it over. (this was an issue with the FSÖI was always training, keeping him out of things, staying on top of himÖit wore me outÖ.I still love him though)

Oh..and we have a cat

Iím actually considering a Chocolate or Black Lab. For some reason Iím interested in the Brittany spaniel but I donít know a lot about them. Iíve posted a query about them in the Dog Breed section of the forum. Any other suggestions would be wonderful!!! Thanks!!!
