So these people put down their puppies b/c they were sick? That's why everyone is so afraid?

I understand people's concerns, I'm concerned myself & will probably wait a while or wait until I move out of Canada, but I just can't believe that everyone who owns a dog has that much money.

I know animals cost a lot. I used to have my animal room back when I did have a lot of money.

I think there needs to be balance between the money & giving a dog a good home plus having a companion. I think they did some studies (I didn't need the study to know this) on people who get depressed with & without dogs & of course the people with dogs were less likely to get depressed. So IMO it's clear we need dogs just as much as they need us, although I see many people who own a dog who ignore it or abuse it, but those are control issues.

Thanks

Michelle

People put pups down that are sick, people dump them by the side of the road or in a river, take them out back and shoot them, put them in dumpsters, for having diseases that were preventable or treatable, people dump their dogs in the drop off boxes at the shelter, where sick dogs go directly to euthanasia, and do not pass the adoption option.
That is what the good dog people worry about. It is a sad reality.

Dog ownership is not a right, it is a privilege. Dogs bring health benefits to some, and allergies to others. Owning a dog when money is tight can be done, but requires commitment and sacrifice for a long time, and few people are good at that sort of thing, at least in the US. Heck, marriage has the same or greater 'health' benefits as pet ownership, but how many of those last? The average marriage is shorter than the average life expectancy of a dog (again, in the US).
I think that is what some of us worry about, at least it is what worries me.

sensualspirit, from what you've told us I think you would absolutely be a good and caring dog owner. The financial thing is the only thing thats hard for anyone to gauge. I don't think you'd be one of those who put your dog to sleep or ditched it because it had health issues, but I'm not sure how much you'd be able to sacrifice if something bad did happen to the dog in order to pay for the vet bills. I think the best way for you to cover that is to just get a credit card that you put aside specifically for potential vet bills. As long as you can handle making payments to that card without causing severe financial grief to yourself, I think you'll be ok

NO, of course I'd never do that. My god, I can't believe people do that.

I love ALL animals, although I'm sure there are some that would scare me

I'm also against hunting unless it's for consumption of food.

Just the fact that so many species are becoming extinct sickens me. I just signed a petition today about whales. Maybe I'll post it here when I get it from my other computer.

Take care everyone!
