Hello all! I am new to this forum and I am still not entirely sure how to do a lot of things :x So please let me know if I am doing anything wrong here!
My husband and I rescued a mixed breed dog in march of this year. We are totally unsure of what he is or what he went through. All we know is the condition we got him in. We named him Artax (after the horse from The Never Ending Story)
When we got Artax he was 10 ibs under weight- he was 30ibs and now is at his proper weight at 40 ibs. He had tons of puncture wounds all over his neck, back, and head that had scabbed over. His coat was terribly dull and he would go through periods of acting depressed when he refused to eat. We gave him a bath one night about a week after we got him. That night we woke up to Artax having his first seizure. We were freaked out and moved up his vet appointment to the next day. We took him to the closest vet we could that seemed to have the highest rating. They told us he had a few types of intestinal parasites, ear mites, lymes, and heart worms. I was devistated. First we got rid of the mites and parasites. However, each time I went back to this vet they were very unprofessional and always made us feel like total idiots. The vet only seemed to care about the money involved and always tried to sell his in-store products. I was not fond of him so I found a smaller office run by one lady. We went in for another evaluation. At this point his ears and parasites had cleared up nicely. She did a heart worm test, but right in front of us. It came up negative and we were shocked. The other vet had lied to us just to get us to go through expensive treatment. It was a relief, though. The new vet gave us some meds for his joints to help ease the pain of the lymes. Artax had just experienced his second seizure right before we switched vets. She told us he may have had head trauma from whatever he went through before we had him. Or that it could be the lymes. She also informed us that he is around 5-6 years of age.
Artax is such a different dog now that we put him on the meds- He is active and happy all the time. No more depression! He runs around and gets excited. He loves his walkies but is still the same sweet dog he always has been
This dog never even barks, nips, or anything. He just wants to be loved. Our 8 month old son pulls on his hair and Artax just takes the pain :P Its painfully obvious that this dog was abused- If you make too quick of a motion around him he shakes and crouches down with his tail between his legs. He looks as though he is bracing himself for a blow. How anyone could beat a dog, especially one as good as Artax is beyond me.
We think he is a spaniel (probably springer or French) australian shepherd mix. Most likely some other things too. He is a total mutt and I love it
He stalks prey just like a spaniel and even does a lot of pointing!
If one of you wonderful individuals could tell me how to attach a picture it would be most helpful! I can only use my phone to post btw. Thank you all for reading our story!! I am so excited to join this site
