I figured I'd drop a note and introduce myself.
I've had dogs all my life, and decided to dedicate myself to helping them. I am often helping a few rescue groups with rehabilitating otherwise unadoptable "problem" dogs, where I take them into my home and work with them until I find them their forever home.
So far I (we really, my wife and I) have adopted out over 30 dogs, half of which were to be put down for their behavior issues.
I also work as a dog trainer at a large chain store I'm not allowed to mention on the internet. While I occasionally get flak from other trainers that lump all of the stores together, I can't count how many people I've gotten away from choke, prong, and electronic collars, and into positive training methods, people who would never think to go see a trainer. It's gratifying to see people who came in fuming and about to get rid of their dogs, later getting compliments on how good their dogs are.
I do basic obedience, but I do a lot more work with behavioral problems.
I use all clicker based, positive reinforcement training. I was originally trained (prior to working at the chain store) using classic negative reinforcement methods, but didn't like the way the dogs were after using it, which was my first introduction to shutdown. So I switched and never looked back.
I have 3 personal dogs, and 2 fosters at the moment, a 13yr old white german shepard mutt, a 10 yr old russian wolfhound (borzoi) mutt, and a 7 mo. old australian shepard.
I'll be around off and on, and offer what advice I can, while picking the brains of others, but mostly I'll be bragging about my dogs!
