It's great to have found a forum that is all about dogs and I hope to be a useful member here, or at least an active one
I'll start by saying that we have a fairly packed home that consists of me, my girlfriend, our 7 year old kid, 3 dogs a cat and 3 fish (55 gallon tank) so there is usually something going on.
I'll start with the two that we have had the longest, enter Trixie and Ramona
"Just being cute"
There is a bit of a story as to how we came to have two dogs rather than just one in the first place. It all started with Trixie (the pit with her head on the other dog). We had decided that it was time for us to get a family dog and quickly decided that we wanted an adult dog. Not because we didn't think there would be no training involved but it was a 'you know what you're getting' type of thing. We weren't picky about what breed just that we wanted a bigger dog and around that time I found an add on kijiji saying free dog and was very vague so I e-mailed the person and he sent a picture and I fell in love with the "brown nosed pitbull" in the picture so we got her. Like everyone we heard the stories about pitbulls and how they can just 'snap' or 'randomly attack kids' but we didn't even need to do research to know that simply wasn't true. Some of our family was concerned we had doomed our child to getting mauled by a beast the size of an elephant. Then they met the cute little 55 pound lap pit that was Trixie.
This is where the story (for us anyway) picks up. A month after having Trixie one morning she starts panting and laying down. We knew that she wasn't fixed yet which is why she had no time outside without us right beside her so we started getting worried. I was petting her side and then felt something move. I had a dog that had puppies when I was younger but I didn't want to believe that she could be pregnant (she had just had a litter of puppies for the person that had her previously by the way) about an hour or two later came the first puppy. After 8+ long hours she ended up having 8 puppies, a few of which I had to assist with birthing which I had never done before - THANK YOU INTERNET!
One in particular she had simply ignored to clean off the other puppies after it had come out. It was the run and was still in the sack and left to be ignored on the floor. I pulled open the sack and cleaned around it's mouth the best I could and gently rubbed her with a warm facecloth until she started to breath. Luckily Trixie looked after her after that. This little puppy was later named Ramona. It wasn't an immediate decision to keep her but she had been smaller than all the rest, a little more nervous and so we decided we would keep her with us. So dog number 2
Side Story: We ended up buying a 15 gal tank for my kid and his better, then we got a pleco which quickly out grew the tank so I got the 55 gal.
After about a year (I think, I'm really bad with time) our local SPCA was having a pay what you want for cats so we went in to take a look. I have allergies to cats but certain ones don't cause as bad a reaction and when I am around them enough i become immune. The cat I wanted unfortunately caused me to react so we kept testing then we found this guy and named him Merlin
Things were a little rocky the first few days but then there was love
"I'm not hurting her, I swear!"
We were living in a trailer then and things were pretty packed especially with the little one growing up so then we moved in September 2012. Once we got settled in everything had more than enough space. So in February we decided we needed to fill that space and got word of someone who has 13 pups but accident. We called them up so we can take one off their hands >_> if they needed it but they wanted 200 bucks for them so we decided against it since it had only been a whim thing and we weren't looking to spend that kind of money to get a dog when we already had two. Then during that weekend they called us and asked if it was the money and we said yes and they decided they just needed a good home for them. So I introduce to you the newest member Rocky (or as I call him Rockstar Super Nova!)
Our dogs are not dog aggressive but they get super excited when they see a new dog (continually working on it) but they took to Rockstar here pretty much right away
He likes to chase and jump on the cat when he can catch him but he hasn't bit or tried to hurt him yet. Merlin usually smacked the other dogs when they bug him but just mews at the puppy.
As for the Breeds of the dogs
Trixie: American (Canadian? - yes I'm canadian) Pitbull Terrier
Ramona: APT mix
Rocky: Bull mastiff, Great Dane, Shepard mix (may be a big boy)
I'll leave you all with a few pictures I find particularly cute of the dogs
"I'm a dog too!"
