1st Time Puppy Owner From GA, With a Fear of Dogs

Hello Everyone, My name is Deus. Today I have a story for you guys. So I am 21 years old and have raised 3 cats. I have never been a dog person in the least. Actually, to be honest dogs have always frightened me. Due to a bad experience as a child (A dog chasing me down on a bicycle) I have always been petrified of dogs. Well fast forward to 3 months ago, my little brother leaves for navy boot camp, and for once I am all alone and lonely. I am not sure where the idea came from but over time I decided that I wanted a dog, but a small one at that. Well my brother gets out and unfortunately I still not have gotten the dog I wanted, and the cats are really my grandma's. Well my brother and his wife adopt another dog, (on top of the fullly grown lab they have).

So here the story of apollo begins. The local shelter that we have is a kill shelter. And on facebook they post a list of the animals that will be put down and the time. Well 2 month old apollo is on that list. So my brother and his wife scoop him up without a second thought even though they have a dog (and by dog I mean a bear) they can barely handle as it is. Well they show the puppy to me and I instantly fall in love with the little guy. I'm holding him in my arms and cuddling him as we drive around and god do I want a puppy so bad. Well his wife looks back at me and says ''hey... how would you like to keep him?" i'm shocked but say yes, and here we are. A first time puppy owner, who is in love with his dog, while also trying not to be afraid off him.

This is the little guy. He is 3 months old and is a shepherd breed. I love him so much, and even though he terrifies me at times, I don't know how i've made it this far without him.

He's very cute! Congrats! He looks like he is going to get big.

You should probably speak with a trainer and get in some classes sooner rather than later. He is going to be a big dog and a trainer is going to help you be able to work with the dog and build his confidence as well as build yours. They also may be able to help you through the puppy issues that arise that might frighten you. Things like jumping, nipping, chewing, etc. He's small now and scares you a little, imagine if he is an out of control 50lb dog doing those things.

I would definitely work on your fear. For me, knowledge is the killer of fear. The more you can learn about dogs, the less you will fear them.

I would highly suggest registering at dogstardaily.com (it's free) and downloading/reading everything. You should also read everything written by Jean Donaldson and Karen Pryor. Watch kikopup on youtube and follow zac george on facebook.

Also, I doubt I could resist that face, either.

Hi there! Your pup is gorgeous and thank God he got saved. I agree with everyone here regarding gaining as much knowledge as possible and hiring a trainer. Basics at this young age will go a long way for the rest of his life. And the training is always more for the people than the dogs 'cause it's always bad owners that cause problems, not bad dogs (since there's no such thing as bad dogs). Learn as much as you can and you'll do fine. And big congrats!!
