I have mushrooms growing in my yard. I never noticed them before and I have lived here for 2 years now. There is a patch of them in one spot only. They are right where I take my dog out to go potty. If he eats these, will they hurt him? I don't know whether to leave them alone or pick them all so he doesn't eat them.
I'd pick them. Wild mushrooms aren't usually good for us and I can't imagine they're be great for a dog So unless you have good mushroom knowlegde and know if they're poisonous or not, I'd get rid of them
Young dogs will eat everything, most of which passes through them, but I too always worried about mushrooms. Most mushrooms are not really edible. A few are actually toxic. However, if your dog shows no interest in them, then I would not worry about it. Usually adult dogs are less compelled to put everything in their mouths... except for some dogs especially labs! ;-)
If you decide to pick them, keep in mind that won't stop the mushrooms from growing. The main fungus is underground and the mushroom is just the reproductive part that comes up seasonally, so they'll be back.
It depends on the type of mushroom!
Some are harmless and others are very poisonous.
I would watch your dog to be sure he does not eat them and also remove them from any areas he frequents.
This link (from Ohio State University's website) might help you to figure out what type of mushroom you are dealing with. Just be aware that often multiple types of mushrooms (edible and poisonous) look very similar. So if you are in doubt it is far better to be safe than sorry! Wild Mushrooms, HYG-3303
