Is it late?

I got a Spitz Mix (according to the vet), but I think it's an Australian Border Collie, or a Border Collie mix, I know she has Border Collie in her. She doesn't grow in size and is medium-sized, she is about 1 year old, could be younger than 1 year old, could be just a bit older than 1 year, 1 year and 1 month or 2 maybe. I didn't trust the former owner, so I asked the vet and he says it's around 1 year.

My question is: is it late for me to teach/train her, for example, to tell her what to do, where to go etc. I've had her for about 3 weeks, but sometimes she's very stubborn and doesn't come to me even if I call her name. Why is that? Can I still work on her, or it's late now, as she's 1 year old?

Answers are much appreciated

You can always train a dog no matter the age it takes patience and you may want to consider renaming her if you kept her name as her previous owners may have punished her while using her name. Start fresh like she was a puppy....teach her to look at you when you say her name, click (if using a clicker) or say something like yes, then treat. You can always get her into an obedience class as well

I thought changing the name would be stupid and it wouldn't work, as she was called Bubi for more than a year now. I don't think he punished her or something, don't want to be that pessimistic and negative-thinking lol

Oh you got her from a private owner, I thought you got her from a shelter. Well just start slow, you cant expect her to come to you, a new owner, when you call her name. You need to train her that coming to you is a positive thing that deserves lots of treats!

No, I got her from an owner, a friend of my friend, to be more exact. He had 3 dogs, 1 German Shepherd, the one he sold me and another one similar to mine, but a male. He decided to get rid of the Shepherd and the one I have now and keep just the other one.

Maybe he didn't treat her as I'm treating her, but I'm sure he didn't punish her or something like that

Sweet
there could be BC in there somewhere , she's a beautiful colour

You can change her name should you want to ... when we got Teddy from the rescue last sept he was almost three years old and they asked us whether we would be changing his name ... as it turned out we thought he suited his name and liked it too so didnt want to , but a dog will easily learn to adapt to a new name given lots of patience and of course , lots of treats

did you TEACH her to come when called? Dogs don't come with preprogramed commands installed
