I was curious as to what you named your dog?
Was their a specific reason to their name?
Did you have a list of names that you went through?
What you name the poster above you's dog, would it stay the same or be something completely different?

For me I picked the name Sawyer for my boy. I didn't really have a reason for it, other then I liked the name. And I was kind of determined to name a dog Sawyer :D, and luckily it fit.

Sawyer is adorable! Say if I adopted him and he was already named Sawyer then he would definitely keep the name. I also like the name Ollie however.

My girl is Callie, when I was thinking of names it came down to two names - Callie and Nikita (the TV show Nikita just ended and I loved that show..) but no matter how 'exciting' I made myself when saying Nikita, Kit, Kita or Nikky she never responded. As cliche as it is, I said Callie afterwards and over she came, happy as ever.

I had the name Lila picked out for 3 years before I actually got my girl.

When I was working in a vet kennel one summer, an amazing rescue pit/great dane mix came in from the local kennel. Ohhhh I wanted that dog. She stayed overnight since she'd just been spayed so I spent some time with her. Her name was something I hated (like Mipsy or Fluffy) so I called her Delilah (they were 12 hour shifts don't judge me). So obviously I couldn't take her home, but the "Lila" part of the name just stuck in my head. I decided that when I could get a dog I'd name her Lila.

Before I actually got Lila, I also considered Ruby and Gwendolyn (Gwen), but Nothing fit that sassy little puppy quite as well as Lila. I also prefer my dogs to have 1890s names since that's the time period I study most in depth. I also started having dog themed dreams in December and those dogs were all named Lila.

Honestly, nothing fits this dog like Lila! Pronounced Lie-lah not Lee-lah. That seems to trip people up :p

Nola is after New Orleans LA. I had three girl names on my list for her, and Nola wasn't on it. :p It just fit; she has that Cajun flair and she's just a little odd and spooky. Plus, it's really uncommon; I dislike common names personally. She was named the night she came home.

Pike is after Robert Crais' character Joe Pike in the Elvis Cole novels. He and the character both have blue eyes. The character wears sunglasses 24/7, and Pike has darker pigment around his eyes. I like again that it's uncommon, and also a single syllable. It fits him perfectly.
He was nameless for a good 3-4 days after I got him. I had a massive list that included Ranger, Eli, Bond, Jet and Voodoo, but only Pike fit.

My dog's name is Index. People have tended to assume that it's a computer thing because I work in tech. My paper background is in visual studies and semiotics and Peircean semiotics is actually where the idea came from. Roughly put, for Peirce, an index is a class of sign by which other phenomena are interpreted or referenced. And seeing as I expected the dog to be a centering influence in my life, it seemed like a fitting name possibility.

It's also easy to say, starts with 'I', has an 'x', can be distilled into the nicknames 'Dex' and 'Indy', and has some concrete associations I find pleasant. (Who doesn't like being able to find stuff in their books?)

The computer thing kind of did clinch it, though. When the dog started climbing out of his kennel at 8 weeks old another programmer made a dumb Index Out of Range joke at me, and the rest is history.

Quenya because I knew I wanted something really individual and different for her. Also, I was going through a total nerd-fest period at the time I got her (Quenya is from LOTR). It always trips people up when I tell them her name ("Kenya?" is many people's response. It's pronounced like it looks: Quinn-Yuh)

Victoria, I did not get to choose. Once I "got" her (after she'd been sharing my house for years) I started calling her Tory for short, which I like a little better. Victoria/Tory both fit her very well, though so I'm not bothered by it.

Skipper was the first dog I got to choose both a registration name and a call name for. SH is his breeder prefix so that wasn't part of my choice. I knew I wanted to name my sport dog something to do with the Ocean. I love the water, adore the coastline and live in Florida. Skipper's color (Isabella/Pearl) is the dilute of Liver/Chocolate so has this lovely, soft blue-brown look to it. I also love folk/old timey music and Maritime Lullaby as a sort of sea-shanty inspired name just seemed perfect. Skipper is in keeping with the Marine theme and is also a homage to one of my favorite dog movies, My Dog Skip :)

When I adopted him, his name was Ruger.

He is slightly retarded, and constantly likes to drag toys about. I didn't like the name Rugar because it reminds me of a deadly weapon, and this dog was so gentle and funny that the name just didn't fit.

I named him HaHa, for several reasons. The name, is also the name of one of my all time favorite comedians...a guy in Korea, who's real name is Ha Dong Hoon, his stage name is HaHa. One of the things people joke about with HaHa, is that he's dumb, but on the Korean action variety show he is on, he's proved more than once that he's not as dumb as he looks or lets on sometimes.

So, the name HaHa just seemed to fit when I got this silly dog home - he's not real smart, but not totally dumb either and he makes me laugh all the time.

HaHa

This is Jaya, which means something like strong/brave in the Hindu language. She's fearful of everything, and at first I didn't think the name fit her, but as I've worked with her and found she has something deep within that lets her overcome her fear and she tries to be brave and learn what I want her to learn. She sometimes has to do a few laps around the yard before getting up enough courage to come to me, but she over comes her first instinct to keep away and finally makes the commitment to come to me. She was abused by her prior owner and never learned to trust humans.

I named Riley after a character from the show The Boondocks. I also considered naming him Huey (Riley's brother on the show), who was more serious/intelligent/methodical but it just didn't fit. Riley turned out to fit his namesake well, he's a fun-loving, crazy and impulsive jerk, who you can't help but love :D

My dog had the name Abigail since being caught as a pup, I think. So she'd had the name roughly 7 years before I had her. I wasn't allowed to change it when I adopted her, rightfully so.. but I really dislike the name lol. I would have probably named her Lumen if I got to name her myself, though that doesn't really "fit" her either.

We adopted her at 7 months and I wanted her to have a special name .Kaiah means " rare beauty " . I named our Yorkie Oscar just because I love the name ..

Katie was named by her breeder and we kept it since she was obviously accustomed to it. She and her sister Pippa were named for the royal wedding people (the girl who married Charles and Diana's son and her sister).

Tyson was named for the astrophysicist (not the chicken or boxer). We had a few names under consideration for several weeks:

Newton (reg name: Sir Isaac) - not as easy to say as other names
Dewey (reg name: Active Inquiry) - no strong affinity
Tyson (reg name: Pluto Killer) - huge geek crush on NDGT

As his personality started to show more, I sort of regret not going with Dewey as he's a curious little explorer.

Penny was called Jenny at the shelter. That is my sister's name and we couldn't really have two of them in the house! Penny keeps the general sound, but changing to the harder "P" from the "J" makes them distinctive to the ear. It's a sweet name for a dog too, I think.
@zoorun I knew a farm dog named Bramble, a fluffy (and kinda mean!) collie cross.

Roxie, or Roxanne, was unnammed for the first day. I had the hardest time naming her because I was trying to please my parents (who I had just convinced to let me keep her) and my boyfriend, now fiance. First she was Cinder, but no one liked that. Then Ally because she would snap her jaws like an alligator, but I have a cousin named Ally and my mom told me that was weird. Then I took her outside and I had to chase her away from the Rocks that she kept putting in her mouth, and I told her she was dumber then a box of Rocks. and Rox turned into Roxie which turned into Roxanne. We also laugh because of the song, Roxanne, I found her walking the streets, So OF COURSE she got a streetwalkers name!

Forbes came with his name. He is named after Oscar Forbes, who was one of the early Australian explorers. I guess at 2 days old he was the first puppies to crawl out of the welping box. She wasn't sure how he did it but she found him off exploring. His wild personality also won him his registered name 'Valor's Where the Wild Things Are', which I LOVE. I am not a huge fan of Forbes, but he knew it well, and I couldn't think of anything I liked that was even CLOSE to it. So Forbes stayed.

Forbes and Roxie are great names. I love hearing of all the different names people call their pets and how they came about them.

My dog is called Doris and I will admit, it was a drunken conversation that me and my partner had that resulted in her being called that.

His daughter wanted to call her Diamond or Princess but my partner refused to stand in a field and call her that as he said it would be too embarrassing for him. He decided to go against everyone and wanted to call her Butch which I was firmly against.

So as a joke, and because my partner calls several female friends Doris, I suggested we call her that as he obviously doesn't mind saying that name and so it stuck.

Most people love it, others hate it. The best is when little old ladies greet her as they are either called Doris themselves or have a sister, cousin, best friend called Doris and they seem to love the name the most ha ha

Riley: came with his name and seeing as he was only suppose to be a "temporary" 4-6 month foster (it has been about 4 years now) we didn't change it..

Bambi: First time she was on leash after we brought her home she pulled a Bambi (legs splayed everywhere, like Bambi was, when he fell on the ice in the movie...) and at the time my younger Daughter was just beginning to talk (delayed speech) and Bambi was one of the few words she would say on her own...

Dycen: Is a bit of a Drama queen and, as bad as this is going to sound, is named after a very dear friend of mine ( Dycen is a shortened version of the person's last name) growing up who has a tendency to be overly dramatic at times.....

Dexter: Well, We have come to notice that he can be a bit food aggressive (towards other dogs, my husband and I can take food from him no problem) and at one point he growled at Dycen as he walked by (we are closely monitoring and working with him), well I made mention that it appears that food (in his mind) is Justifiable cause for homicide and immediately the name Dexter popped into my head, and well it just stuck...

Unfortunately getting a good pic of Riley is near impossible but, Here are a Couple of Riley n Bambi...
