Dog barking and jumping at people - not in a friendly way
Hi, I am totally new to this forum, and I would love some advice/ideas. We recently got a young rescue dog that we heard was neglected, and was then kept outside with little socialization. He is apprehensive about strangers, but once you give him treats or let him approach you without giving him much attention he warms up and is super friendly and cuddly.
We have some difficulty walking him when he runs into people that talk to him and want to pet him, and he starts barking at them and sometimes jumps toward them. We always keep him on short leash and hold him back when he does this. Sometimes he will let people pet him but then when they start talking or start walking away, he barks at them.
I've seen various recommendations online, such as steering clear from people when we see them, but this isn't always possible. I've also heard to not scold him and instead praise him while passing people so that he will associate people with good feelings. Sorry this is long, but I would love to hear what everyone thinks we should do when we run into people on our walks so that he doesn't appear aggressive. Thanks!
