Will fixing stop him from growling @ people?

I have a 3 y.o., male, English golden retriever who has not been fixed. He growls at males and children who visit our house. His mother growled at my son before we put purchased him but we thought this was motherly protection. We were thinking of breeding him but didn't pursue this as yet. Will fixing him stop the growling?

It will not fix the problem- behavior modification and possibly medication, depending on the cause, will help. I would get an experienced trainer involved.

I would still recommend fixing him and definitely not breeding him as this is not a good behavioral trait for any dog, especially not a golden retriever! That breed should be friendly and social regardless of sex and hormones.

I agree- neutering is not going to resolve the growling. IME, neutering doesn't really "fix" any behavior, even when it helps, and I also tend to feel it helps less often than people make it out to.

I would also advise finding someone to assist with working on his feelings towards strange men and children in the house. The most common cause of a growly dog in this kind of situation is fear/insecurity. An in-person professional is invaluable in resolving these kinds of cases. Here is a good link for deciding how to find a good trainer: https://apdt.com/resource-center/how...a-dog-trainer/

Finally, I would also agree with revolutionrocknroll in this dog probably not being a good candidate for breeding based off of this tendency alone. Some breeds are supposed to be aloof towards strangers, so this kind of behavior might be less alarming- i.e., it's less likely to make me think the dog is inappropriately fearful, because they are more likely to be growling out of a "this is not your house" than "eeeek who are you?!?". Goldens are meant to be social, outgoing, and friendly even towards complete strangers. If you are still set on breeding him, I would check out the recommended health tests on the golden retriever club of america page and get all of those done at a minimum before breeding.
