Weird barking habits

Hi guys!
Mabel (8 month old springer spaniel) has been showing some odd behaviour. She absolutely loves people, greets every person the way she would greet me (very enthusiastic). Her issue is with people at a distance. We were at the dog park last week and she was barking loud and deep at a person that was working on construction about 30-40 meters away from us. She also did this when we were at the dog park tonight. Her recall is getting better, and I was able to draw her attention each time and get her to stop. She also does this at our back window and sometimes while she is out for a pee in the backyard. If the person comes up to her she greets them happily and shows no signs of aggression, except for the barking. I'm not sure why she is doing this, and if anyone knows I'd be glad for ideas and suggestions!

Perhaps related to the secondary fear period in adolescent dogs.

I've somewhat wondered if dogs which experience this at an elevated level have difficulty with things at a distance as their senses are not all "convinced" of what the object is 100%. Example: if a dog sees a familiar object in the distance but is upwind of the object, there is no supporting feedback for the dog to confirm what it is seeing in the distance. Sight, smell and hearing all are tools for a dog to identify objects at times and the more of the senses agreeing with each other more than likely diminish any apprehensive tendencies in a dog going through this phase.

Not that this is necessarily what's going on with your pup but just for the heck of it, when traveling into the wind with your pup, see if the dog acts the same once she sees something familiar off in the distance but has already winded it.

My dog barks at the dog park once it gets dark. He patrols the fence and every strange noise or person is suspect. I think of it as he's trying to protect us who are in the park. He knows when I say no barking and call him so he stops, runs over to me for his treat and rubs back to continue barking if the person or thing is still there lol. Not exactly the point, but is improving the recall at least. To really stop the barking I have to hold him with me.
He also barks at people if he's tied or locked up. Even if he recognizes them. They can walk right up to him and pet him and he's friendly but he'll bark until they get to him. Maybe he feels vulnerable or is warning me? I've heard dogs sight isn't as good as their hearing and smell. Maybe that's what your dog is doing too.

Thanks so much! I feel like it might be a combination of your answers. I think maybe it is her secondary fear period and her trying to protect us from things she can't identify! Hopefully it goes away on its own, we're also working through her fear of the dark so that probably contributed to it too :/
