Unsettled at night (any ideas?)

Hi
Dont know if anyone can help but this is the story, My mum and dad have a (approx - was a rescue) twelve year old male terrier(not sure of the breed as was rescue but kind of like a Jack Russell with a beige short coat). He has been with my mum for about 10 years and has suddenly started barking at night, he just wont settle. He normally sleeps in his bed on the landing and has done ever since they got him. He normally goes to bed and gets up with my dad at 5am then normally goes to my parents room until my mum gets up however if they told him to go to his bed he always would. My mums mother died a couple of weeks ago and ever since he came back from the kennels (where they had to leave him for the funeral, but he has been to these kennels a number of times before without problems) he has been going to bed but waking them by barking and howling at about 1am and then not settling for the whole night. They are shattered. He has also become very clingy. Mum doesnt want to give in and start having him in their room but this is really causing a problem - any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks.

First off welcome to the dog forum Impossible Princess. Im sorry that your mother's mom passed away and your parents dog is going through a rough patch. There maybe a number of possible issues. First at twelve he maybe starting to experience hearing loss or vision loss. Hearing loss might explain his actions. I would have a vet check him out in his next exam to see if these are problems for him.
It seems that the kennel stay triggered the problem. Im thinking something happened there that startled him or made him uncomfortable.
However, he maybe reacting to your mom and since she is expreiencing stress and grief of loosing her mom, the dog maybe reacting to her.
