Hello! i recently adopted a dog that was taken from the streets and had a history of abusive behaviour. She was shaking uncontrolably when we got her, she is a small breed and aproximately 8 months old.
We have struggled a lot to train her to control pee, for anything else she is just the perfect cute little doggie. My wife says she is tired of it, (being afraid of her peeing so often), she wants to give her back for adoption.
I know she has a sad past and it would kill me to give her back since im already so attached, but i have to admit if this training doesn't work we might have no choice. She is a VERY shy and sensitive dog, who freaks out and starts shaking if you move her bed, tie her temporally to a spot, if she knows we have seen the pee, etc.
Being a nervous small puppy she obviously has bladder control issues, but apart from that she also has a little excitement pee and A LOT of submission pee.
I'm going all in, gonna take her to the vet again to discard any medical issues, will get diapers for a few days (we have a visit coming), exercise, teaching her commands, never scolding her for peeing, lots of love and hopefully socialization with other dogs, avoid eye contact, etc etc.
I have a few questions though:
1. Will spaying her help? she is at the proper age anyway
2. Since she has submissive peeing, is it a good idea to do cage training or can it be counterproductive (even if she ends up loving her cage, she might feel punished for being forced inside?)
3. Is there any other tips you recommend?
It would kill me but if this doesn't work she might not be a good fit, she could use a house with more dogs so she builds more confidence, and maybe even with a garden where she can constantly pee.
Sorry for the long post and thank you for your help.
