Trained 2 yo Mal new to household need crate coaching.

HI All,

Great to be here!! I just got a 2 yo mal boy who is fully trained as a sniffer, he can't socialize with other dogs as he is very very timid and hides from even a chihuahua!! I guess the owners we got him from said he was a fully trained Government tracker in certain things and well has spent the whole 2 years of his life working and in a cage. I had tried to put him in his crate a few times but he cries and whines. I've never owned a fully trained working dog before, I know there are certain things we need to do to integrate him into family life. I am taking him to the dog park on a daily basis but it seems like its too much for him as he cowers and hides from all other dogs.

At home he's constantly working always sniffing. How do I get him to the point of firstly enjoying the crate and secondly breaking him of the work mode?

HELPPPP!!!!

So this is a two year old dog that was sold as being a "fully trained tracker", but not placed as a working dog?

It sounds like he was perhaps a release dog from a detection program, and from his behavior it sounds likely he was released for behavioral reasons.

What were your goals in getting this kind of dog? What kind of dog experience do you have? Do you have any training plans for this dog of any kind?

I would highly recommend hooking up with a good positive reinforcement based trainer who can help you work on general obedience and some behavioral modification.

I would highly suggest staying out of the dog park with a dog who is showing a fearful reaction to other dogs. At some point, a dog- especially a shepherd- is going to react defensively. Forcing a dog to "face its fears" is a method that often backfires. He'll likely need careful re-socialization around other dogs and the world, since he sounds like he has very little background socialization.

I'd be curious to hear more about your dog experience, any training plans, how you ended up with this dog, and why he was released from this program before giving more advice.
